Footjam Whip Setup?

Thing with doing it brakeless is that when the bike's at the half-way point, if your weight's too far forward then the bike shoots out from back underneath you. It also makes it a lot easier to get back over as you don't have to keep 'jamming' the wheel 'til the last possible second, you can kinda be more casual. Also makes it a lot easier to get into it, and your accuracy of the footjam is less important.

What are you having trouble with when you're doing them? Are you getting the kick done right?

I can get the bike all the way round using front brake, but cant get my feet on the pedals, but i have no problem getting my feet on the pedals with crank spins lol, weird, its pretty scary when you lean too far forward aswell lol

a few things.....the rear wheel often hits the floor at the 180 point.....I lose my balance and fall off the side.....and mostly I can't spot the pedals and get my feet where I want

You have to kinda sit down onto it, almost. Like when you're kicking it round, keep your weight back and low. You need to keep your bike level, so if you lean too far forward then you're just going to angle it too steeply and it's going to hit. So yeah, keep your weight low and back, and keep the bars back towards you!

If you look at Gez in this pic, his front end's pretty much upright. Bearing in mind he's got a 75° head angle, compared to a trials bike's slacker front end, you can see that you need to keep it held back a bit, if that makes sense?

Same with Mat, you've just got to kick it slower and just focus on getting your front foot back on. Whichever foot you use as the 'jam' foot is the one you want to aim to get on first, 'cos that'll stop the bike and make it easier to get your back foot on. So yeah, just focus on getting that foot on and the other usually follows. You'll probably have a period where you're a massive pussy with your back foot and it'll just float about over the pedal, but as soon as you commit fully then you're good to go.

Yeah i usually use my right foot to put ont tyre, which is my lead foot, but either end up whipping too fast and just falling off or too slow and it not going all the way around, or just not daring to lean back and put my feet back on the pedals :P , cant imagine doing it without a front brake on the top of a ramp or something.

If you're at that stage then you're pretty much there. It's just a case of practise and refining your technique. If you wanna see a totally flawless one, check out at about 0:30 in this (Also spot the brakeless nosepick a bit before. Balance!)

That guy's also got a 'How To' video out for this too. Pretty dry, but might help someone:

Nah, he didn't. There are a few videos around on him doing longer ones. Dan Lacey's f**king awesome at them too. But yeah, it's just purely balance. They're f**king rock!

Yeah i've got brighton aint ready dvd and seen a couple of dan laceys web-videos, hes an all round beast bmxer, but still think tailwhips are seriously hardcore haha, im gonna try do them when i go riding, think they look ace on bmxs.

EDIT: And knowing damon, he'll do them off a 10ft wall or something ridic.

He does those way different to how I do them. He kinda whips first (kinda like bunny hop whip style) then lands on the wheel with his front foot for a bout a millisecond, then jumps back onto the pedals. I do them rolling along, step on the wheel (with my back foot) and THEN give the back end a good kick round. It seems to work OK (although I never got them very consistently) - but that guy looks waaaay smoother.

EDIT: In answer to the original question - just use longer cables/hoses. I ran a Magura rear and Juicy 7 front disc (I.e. both hydro) with no problems. I tried the hose-through-the-steerer thing but it's totally not worth it, particularly if you have to bleed your brake in the process :P

That's 'cos he's doing it brakeless, and doing it onto stuff, so you have to do the 'whip first' way of doing it. It's harder to learn, but way better 'cos if you just learn it with the roll-along-step-over kinda way of doing it, you're limited pretty substantially to where you can do it. You're ultimately going to have to learn it the 'proper' way at some point anyway, so you may as well learn it that way first!

I can almost get them, just need to stop being a pussy and jump for the pedals.

Do most of you pull your foot over the frame to do them, or as you swing use the other foot?

Foot over the frame - so I have my right foot on my front tyre, and I kick the back end round right. It means catching it's way easier, 'cos like I said before, your front foot gets back on and stops it last, whereas if you've got your back foot on the front tyre you've got to jump over the frame twice as far, if that makes sense?

Yeh makes sense, but just feels so much nicer not pulling my foot over the frame.

I shall experiment :)

Im no dictating, im only advising, because this sport is trials, but in these times, the street with some of trials is considered like trials, when it´s not...

so shut up, my dick

Best post ever.

You guys need to learn to not resort to anger when someone else has a different opinion.
