Tamness™
Someone blow the FatPants whistle to get him in here, we need fixie 'wisdom'.
Mark W
"Cheap" and "Fixie" doesn't really work together any more, just 'cos they're pure fashion so they cost more, pretty much. You can get a cheap single speed or 10-speed road bike for way cheaper than you'll get a fixie, so it might be worth it to go for one of them. If you're too embarrassed to not have a fixie, get the singlespeed and just keep pedalling when you're around people
joshlyd1
Oh i never knew that thanks mark i will look into it arrrggghhh i just remembered i had 2 roadies to build ages ago but got em scrapped for cash ( they were free too )

Fixed Pants™
He's right about gears are for queers. But they don't just break.Shit stuff breaks.Just get an old geared road bike, take the multi freewheel off and all the gearing, slap a cheap acs on the thread, make the chain the right length and pull it back in the drop out (make sure it's not a vertical dropout) and bobs your uncle. But to answer your question better, you won't pick up a cheap fixie. Don't buy a unipack 'imported courier bike' or a 'create' because they are the same thing, and both WILL attempt to kill you more times than you can count. joshlyd1
Ohh thanks glen i think i could scav a vintage/old roadie from someone so all i need to do is get the gears n shiz off shorten the chain and stick a acs on the back
Mark W
You can get away with just running a tighter chain on a normal cassette body with no mech - a friend of mine's got a little commuter bike here that he's done that with. Literally just took the derailleurs off front and rear, made the chain pretty tight on the gear he wanted, and just rides it like that... joshlyd1
Oh even better i will get hold of one soon and use it as a project
Fixed Pants™
Only thing is single speed freewheels like to keep the chain on better than a multi speed freewheel... So if the chain and freewheel are knackered it will be more likely to skip n stuff.

Tomm
He's right about gears are for queers. That's funny. Because I don't know any gay people who ride bikes with gears. But then approx 100% of all fixie riders are gay. How odd.

Tomm
No that's not right. In my (admittedly small) group of two, the gay guy (some "fantpants" chap) rides a fixie. Whereas the definitely-not-gay person has gears. The plot thickens.
Fixed Pants™
Oh but i heard that gears are for people who aren't man enough to suck it up and ride up a hill in one gear?

Fixed Pants™
Depends on what speed you're going obviously. But if there's traffic about i generally do about 15mph if it's slow moving, and it'll take me like 10m to stop?
joshlyd1
Ahh fairly short then so do you just jump them if you cant stop

I'd advise anyone, however hardcore they think they are to keep at least one break though.
