Good rule to go by if you went out and bought a full £1000 build, even if you only owned it for a month, resell value is usually half that price.

Reason being is that is has been owned, yes the components are worth that much, but who would buy used parts at that price when they could go out and buy a brand new build for a little bit more money.

I disagree with that reason, I feel the reason trials bike sell so low is because it's a minority sport, there's just a handful of people who would ever consider buying it (and out of those people, they don't want a full build but parts) and that drives the prices down to rock bottom. Also what doesn't help is there's a lot of people (within the trials community) selling stuff, because trials is a relatively cheap sport compared to downhill rigs people will splash out on new parts meaning not only do they not buy 2nd hand, but sell their old parts on flooding the market with parts dropping the prices. (Which actually you kind of said).

I don't think I've ever seen a trials bike sell for more than 550 pounds whatever the spec was.
