Muel
Hey, I'm going to strip the anodising off my rims.I want to keep them silver, so shot blasting is out out of the question really, I hear you can use caustic soda? But my Dad reckons you can get proper stuff anywhere any more.Any other stuff I can use? Also I can't use the bath, as Daddy would probably flay me if it turned orange, so what can I put them on safely without it staining the surface?Cheers! Luke Rainbird
Caustic soda is the 'proper' way to go, but lots of people seem to have had decent results with Mr. Muscle Oven Cleaner. Spray on, leave a bit, remove. May be worth looking into
Muel
Right i might try that stuf then, has anyone used it to strip an Atomz or Koxx rim? How well did it work?

How well did it work?Hey muel, i used cif (or jif, hy did they change the name:P) over cleaner on my bars to remove the adonised. It worked a treat, there is a section in the wiki on it. x
Duncy H
I used caustic soda on my rims and it worked a treat. Although I had to go to a propper DIY shop to get some good strong stuff. All i did was put it in a sort of shallow bucket and layered it on using a sort of scrubbing brush while rubbing and it soon came off. Ben John-Hynes
I used Mr. Muscle Oven Cleaner on an anodized Viz rim, it took ages and didn't really work very well. However well it works, you'll have to sand the rim after 'cause it leaves it all shitty and black.
Muel
In that case f**k that, I'm just going to get some proper caustic soda.Mind you, if I can't I'll probably still do it, and if it all goes to shit I'll get Daddy to shot blast them and spray them white or black. Rob/Mitch
Causitic soda is the kiddy!Make sure you wear gloves etc though because this stuff is evil. Oh and do it outside because the fumes are deadly tooI used this method to strip my green external bb back to silver and it worked a treat! It will even leave the etched logo behind so it still looks pretty cool.I got mine from B&Q in a little tub, the crystal version, I think it's sold as drain unblocker. Muel
Ah cool cheers.Bit of a silly question, but what will caustic soda melt though? Just wondering about finding something big enough to let the rims soak in it....

Just wondering about finding something big enough to let the rims soak in it....You can use a THICK plastictray or something but dont use too much in your water soloution because it gets pretty hot.I left a middle burnn bash in a thick acrylic type tub for around an hour in my garage and it melted/deformed the tub and was pissing out everywhereThe bash was ruined.. it looked as though it was made of stone!Bust keep an eye on it and use a paint bruch or something the aggitate the anodising to make the proccess quicker!Beware It's serious stuff!.....Make sure you store it somewhere dry too! Fish-Finger-er
how have you got it? if youve got it in either crystal/powder form, or a gel oven cleaner, just paint it on the rim outside, leave it sittin there, then wash it off with a hosepipe and a brush, if it comes as a liquid can you not paint it on in layers. (keep an eye on it, as it will eat the aluminium if left too long)it wont burn through steel, so an old steel bath/oil drum or the like, if theyll fit in there. LukasMcNeal
So if you get it in crystal form all you have to do is mix with water? Right? Edited July 26, 2009 by LukasMcNeal

(Orange ones were anyway).ok sorry, just was like well thats not going to work haha and soda works a treat, you can do it in plastic alsoand keep it dipped in but dont waif for it to come off on its own, keep wiping it with a paint brush or something many just leave it dipped in and cant understand why its not coming off. I did one the otherday looks mint now just needs some sprey lacker over it now and itll be done
Muel
Right I have a big tub of proper caustic soda in a crystal/powder form.I'm guessing I just mix it into a paste and paint it on, leave it then rinse it off?Where shall I rinse it? I don't want it being nasty... Just rinse it in the tub and empty down the drain maybe?
AdamR28
Got any instructions with it? :wink2:DO NOT mix into a paste or you will burn straight through whatever tub you do it in, haha. Anyway me and Stan did a rim of his a while back, looked perfect. Mix it pretty strong (around what they recommend for unblocking toilets) and rub it on with a sponge (use gloves of course), then rinse with warm water or a hose pipe. Muel
The say for cleaning drainpipes that you should use 250g of this stuff per 4 liters, maybe needs to be a bit stronger than that?I'll research online. How did you get inside the box section of the rim?Been thinking of single walling it anyway... will it be strong enough? I run a rubber queen with a maxxis freeride tube and never pinch it?This tube: http://tartybikes.co.uk/product.php?produc...;category_id=
