Gear Ratio's

Hi Guys

I just want to find out what gear ratio's people are using on 20" bikes.

At the moment I'm running 24-16 so 3-2 if I'm right. I'm finding it a little easy would a harder gear be better?

Cheers Ben.

The gearing your using is too hard if anything. The standard is 22:18, havent got a calculator on hand to work out the ratio. Best for mod to increase clearance an give good ratio is 16:14

Hope this helps

I've just checked and it"s actually 24:18 a friend gave me my back wheel and i assumed it was 16 when actually it's 18.

Cheers.

What he said - 18:12 is "the" ratio, pretty much. It's what the vast majority of people run.

To work out gear ratios, you divide the number of teeth on the front sprocket by the number of teeth on the back. So 18/12 = 1.5, whereas your current 24:18 is 1.33 or something like that. So yeah, essentially, your gear ratio is a little lighter.

Generally though, the point of 18:12 is to reduce weight and give more clearance.

Well i ride a mod, and run 18-14, feels nice, and is better tan 15 because you can get more speed off it, with-out wearing yourself out.

Im soon to be trying backwars gearing 14-18, and see how this feels, no one has tried it , so will be a test (Y).

14:18 would give you half the power of 18:12, so basically, for the average rider doing a gap you might need to do a 1/4 pedalstroke - you'd need to do 1/2. I really wouldn't bother. I'm surprised you're ever running 18:14, 'cos when I ran 18:13 it felt way too spinny.

Yes, personally i dont think its that light,

18-12 is amazingly loose, and i can beat someone with 18-14 gearing quite easily

Or i ould be confused and misconted, but i remember ordering a Echo tr 14 thooth sprocket, maby im wrong, so ill go check.

:S

Thats great. Thanks, so if i put a 16 on the back that will give me the same as 18/12 = 1.5.

Cheers

Ben
