Mark W
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=7962I use one of these. You can get away with the middle plates being on there (The ones you use to take out stiff links), but generally I just snap them off straight away and just leave the plates furthest from the pin on to hold the chain when you're breaking it. Used one of these with a Collapse with no fuss. £5, free postage, etc. - get one!

DannyBazz (:
I just use a regular chain tool to push the pin out, and the hammer it back in with a hammer on the anvil
Mark W
The head of the pin generally needs to stick out from the side plates a bit, so I don't get how you could get it even by hammering it onto a flat surface.Have you broken many chains, out of interest?
