My Reoccurring Back(hop) Pains =[

'llo again,

I've still been trying to nail that backhop and I THINK I might be getting there, but it's seriously frustrating to grasp!

I just want to iron out a few things that may be going wrong,

So firstly, I have little phases where I can really get the bike up to a nice angle and hold it there, though when I try to hop I seem to just make the bike shudder a bit instead and I lean to one side/fall onto the front wheel again.

After this I kinda lose the motion I did for a long while until it 'clicks' again. I kind of get it but I don't know how to complete the 'hop' portion of getting onto the back, as all the issues seem to spur from losing my balance on the back.

In short: "How do I get the other 10% required to master this move~!" :(

Practice, end of really.

Well~ I do find that if I try the quarter crank turn method to do this move when I grip the brake the front end just slams down. What if I made a little hopping lunge forward motion as this happened, would it keep me up and give me a small hop forward?

(Probably just explained the technique to himself like a ponce?)

You really need to relax.

Your falling sideways because you are stiffening up. The front wheel is diving because you are grabbing the brake too hard.

Don't loose faith, everything you are describing is the normal process of learning back wheel shit.

I was convinced I would never get it right. I practiced in my kitchen through a winter and it came good.

It'll happen all of a sudden, you'll just be able to do it.

Over a and over and over again...........

Do it a thousand times and your body learns the necessary co-ordination.

Do another thousand and achieve snap.

Do another thousand and throw more body weight into the technique.

Do another thousand until the action is explosive.............

Just like kickboxing or any other physical skill.

As said, keep relaxed, dont have your arms and legs straight and gradually work on finding the balance point. Try to keep your hips over the rear axle and it should balance quite well :)

The front coming back down hard when you brake is likely because you havent got to the balance point yet and its just gravity working. Try the trick on one of the ryan leech videos where you place the front wheel up on something that will put you near the balance point (I guess about wheel height) and then play with moving your body weight around to see if you can get the front wheel to hover over the object - thats the balance point.

Oh thank you, that's a nice little pointer, I did see that once actually, I just never came across anything wheel height. Though maybe if I started with my front wheel higher than normal I could get to my balance point easier and make progress from there until I don't need the "ledge" anymore.

Tried to practice in the livingroom, didn't go well

You have not found it until you have fallen backwards onto your arse a few times. That 1 or 2 degrees where you feel weightless just before you fall on your arse? That's the balance point. Learn it, commit it to memory. It is your friend.

Yeahehee~ After several frustrating hours at the park I'm totally starting to get it!

I've ditched the little endo rock method for now because the quarter crank turn is really doing it for me. I'm still 1 or 2 degrees away from that perfect balance point but at present i'm keeping it long enough to get 2-3 hops on the back before I falter again. Couple of times I really did click into that perfect point before I overshot one degree and looped out but it felt more "good" than scary.

Hopefully this is the start of a continuous curve of improvement! :D

Good stuff :)

You will soon get used to releasing the brake whilst applying pedal pressure to lift the front if it does start to drop - the fundamentals of trials, now to get the rest of it :D

Yeah~ That's the bit that effin scares the shite out of me.

Slooowly making my way though. Busted my tailbone real good earlier too so i'm DEFINITELY learning :D
