zoobert
hey guys, I'm looking for some advice on the best way to remove a screw on sprocket (not freewheel) from my cranks .I've been experimenting with gear ratios and have decided to change the front sprocket but obviously the front has tightened itself onto the crank with the pressure of pedalling and is on really tight .I've tried using a chain whip on it but it hasn't budged , the sprocket was fitted about a week ago with grease on the threads of both crank and sprocket and soon after I desided I would rather run a different ratioso any hints ,tips or techniques that you use when removing sprockets will be a huge help cheers folks

pogo
Get a length of strong chain attatching it in a vice so it holds the sprocket tightly, then get a big bar onto the crank arm and give it some.
zoobert
Hey, thanks for the tips guys, I finally got the sprocket off by wrapping the chain round it , putting the chain in a vice and using a trampoline leg as big lever simple and effective! I'll remember your tips for the futurecheers

slammin_vinyl
get and old chain and a massive bench vice and wrap chain around the cog and tghten it in the vice and smack the shit out of it with a rubber mallet make sure u turn it the right way though this worked for me it being the crank arm, another option if you dont want to save the old sprocket, just put the sprocket in the vice anyway, tighten hard and use crank arm for leverage.i had to get mine removed and sent it to leisure lakes where they broke 2 of their chain whips gettin it off and only charged me £5 so thats the last shout. they wont be doing anything we wouldnt but for time, effort, and tools/money, let a good bike shop do it.
