The Scientist - Control Break (version 2)

Ok so I've posted some terrible tracks on here before, mainly back when I didn't really know an awful lot about production.

I've learnt tons lately and have started to get much better (I think so anyway lol).

This latest track is about 70% done and I'm really happy with it so far - it is, I guess, Hard Trance but I'm not entirely sure it fits any specific genre. Anyway, here is the full length DJ version in 320kbps MP3 format.

Feedback would be really appreciated!

UPDATE:

Added in some keychanges and other effective stuff... made the drop a little more exciting. Very close to the sound I'm trying to achieve. Could those that downloaded and commented please do the same again and let me know if you think it's better?

Cheers!

PS, I've done a little compression in Maximus to make the high end stand out a bit more - let me know if you think it's too much.

Downloading now Mike!

Will let you know what I think! :)

Just had it on now.

Bearing in mind i've never listened to this kind of music before, i thought it was alright and as someone who really loves low notes in music the synthesized bass stuff was pretty good. Would have loved to be able to try it with a working subwoofer to see just how low it really went, alas i had to make do with the KEF's and they still threw out a fair amount of punch with it to about 30-33hz.

I did find it a little much by the end of the 6 minutes in a kind of repetitive, stick something else on, kind of way but then that's probably more of a reflection on my personal music tastes as opposed to the track itself. In terms of quality though it seemed pretty well put together and fitting of any club/gig setting.

I guess if you did something of the same sort of quality with maybe some really humongous amount of bass/something catchy as the main break ups then i'd love it. The low end stuff in the dizzee rascal bonkers tune is something i find myself strangely transfixed with, along with lots of the pendulum stuff and the frequency drop down section in under the influence by the chemical brothers. I know it's not the same genre of music but the parts themselves are what makes the songs for me so if you could bust out something like that it'd be a sure fire hit with me :D

Sorry i couldn't have been of more use to you on an experienced house/trance listening level.

Listened to it last night. I enjoyed it but it was a little boring and like you say, flat in comparison to your other stuff. Last mix was much better, well i enjoyed it more atleast :P

Keep up the good work though (Y)

It needs key changes to make it more interesting, I'll up it again when that's done and see what you think.

Thanks for the feedback, the reason it "gets a bit much" is because if you were to hear it out in a club you'd not hear the first and last 2 minutes much and also because there's not yet any key changes, it all sounds a bit flat. I'll upload the new version once it's done and see what you think :)

It needs more adding to it, but as a base track I'm really happy with it!

Cheers again for the feedback.

Wont let me download it Mike. Says you need to upload it agian or add to your collection?

Hmm, odd! I'll investigate...

I'll download later mike I can't wait!

Cheers matey :)

Just had a listen Mike, and it's not my forte but I enjoyed it. It does, however, still sound a bit on the flat side. I think it needs a couple of bars of something different beat wise every now and then to keep it fresh. When it comes back in from the break at about 3:30 it sounds like it should be coming back with something extra too - maybe think about adding some higher frequency keys/synth in there to really give it some punch?

Other than those bits I really like the basic idea of it, and the fact I don't like the hi-hat sound at the start doesn't really take away from it for once! You're definitely getter better too.

Just listened to it and you are getting much better at producing Mike (Y) Sounded like it had much better depth and quality of thought going into it, presumably because you now have most of the skills you need to do what you wanted in the first place.

However, I can see what everyone else was saying about it being flat (the version I've got is off Rapidshare, downloaded after I posted the error). Everything sounded as if it was too much in the same frequency range and I thought the synth got lost in the bass at one point.

And one thing that stuck out to me was at 3:05, my personal tastes says that the synth wanted to be a much higher frequency. But then, that's just my preference.

I know that looks like a lot of negatives but it's only because it has reached a standard at which individual things can be picked out. You can definitely tell you're getting better at production, and very quickly as well.

Seems to me there's quite a few empty spaces in it. Hopefully that makes sense. I'm sure it'll be much better when they're filled in.

I assume you mean the first and last two minutes or so?

If so, they're meant to be pretty empty as it's designed to be mixed - ie the end of the last track blending in and then the start of the next blending in. Also, some empty spaces in the middle are good, it breaks it up a bit - if the middle was just 4 minutes of everything going on you'd get very bored :)

Cheers mate, really appreciate the feedback :)

When you say the synth gets lost in the bass, do you mean where I filter it down? I think the filters are a little harsh sometimes, like near the start you can't really hear it building up, it just comes straight in. This is a quick and easy tweak anyway.

I'm not sure which Rapidshare version you got, but try the Megaupload link, it might be the newer better version :)

Cheers matey - the "flat" thing could be where there's no euphoric build up or anything. If so, that's intentional - I'm a little bored of the generic euphoric stuff floating about at the moment.

At around 3:30 there is an extra synth that comes in, it's fairly subtle but you can definitely tell it's there. Listen to it again and you'll see what I mean.

Different beats is a good idea, I might well add some funky little breaks now and then with a bass variation of some kind... I'll have a play then upload it again :)

Thanks for the feedback!

I added a breakbeat in places to break the track up a bit...

I also tweaked the filters on the synth when it first comes in...

I also beefed it up on the main drop that everyone thought was a little flat. I'm personally much happier with it after these tweaks.
