CurtisRider
I got bored about 4:30 yesterday afternoon, and so ventured out into my workshop. After tinkering with my trials bike and spotting a bmx frame, i realised that i wanted a 24 again, but this time not a zoot. A few years ago i had prepared a bb shell and headtube ready for a frame project but never got round to using them, so out they came! Now this is a budget project (ie no money at all, just use what ive got) and i cant really be arsed to make it silly good, because realistically, its not gonna last long regardless of how well i do it. Maybe if i do enjoy it, i will make an effort and use some decent tubing and a jig <img src="http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> This is how it looked by midnight: <img src="http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z301/pauloliver_photos/DSC_0001.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> <img src="http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z301/pauloliver_photos/DSC_0002.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> <img src="http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z301/pauloliver_photos/DSC_0003.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> <img src="http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z301/pauloliver_photos/DSC_0004.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> <img src="http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z301/pauloliver_photos/DSC_0005.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> As you can see, the back end is just tacked togther, the chainstays and seat stays were recycled from a saracen raw frame, but mildy modified with a hammer. The top tube and downtube were recycled off the biggest raleigh mtb frame ive owned, its more of a heavy duty racer <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> Yet to make the dropouts, that will be the most time consuming part i think, still wondering whether or not to have a dics mount. The v mounts are going to be lowered down as they are in the wrong place right now (but were handy as i could use the booster as a jig to hold them together). The front is still being finished, the downtube is shaped and just needfs the rest of the old paint stripping off. The geo is loosely based on a zoot, touch shorter cos my tubes werent long enough. So yeah, there it is <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> itll have matching forks probably too <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> EDIT: oh and any donations of 24 stuff is greatly appreciated! will pay postage <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Edited January 10, 2011 by Paul Oliver
CurtisRider
Right update from the past hour downtube is tacked in, top tube is shaped and ready to tack first i need breakfast...then i will get working on the dropout area and figure out what i want. Still yet to decide as to how im going to mount a seat. Ideally i would ditch the seatpost and have the seat mount directly like the bmx frames with the pivotal interface built in...might just make my own version. I did think of making my own fibreglass mock up of a seat with a post integrated, but ideally i just want something easy might just leave it normal for the moment and see how it goes, its a bmx sized seat tube, so its not like ill be hard pushed to find something that looks good and fits Gussets: Open throat one on the top and downtube? Tubings pretty minimal so i guess i should!

Headtube joins could probably do with it, then depending on how suspect some of the other bits end up...!I think I'm going to try and get my hands on a Pivotal seat at some point, create the mount from steel and just weld it on for ease. Fibreglass could possibly work, but you're going to need to attach it somehow and even aralditing it in probably won't stay as solid. Might be worth a try if you have the kit though. It'll be a side project for som epoint in the future for me - will run it with a post for the time being (will also help to give the rear end a little more beef)
CurtisRider
I have sabotaged several frames, so yeah plenty of steel ill just shape it with a hammer i think ill just stick to a regular rail mounting, this frame wont last long really, itll be about the same as a marino just regular hi ten steel which inevitably wont withstand the abuse that street will give it, as well as the weight of my bitch tits and gut
CurtisRider
More pics! Got the top tube tacked in, and a little throat gusset on the downtube, now crafting the dropouts, got some old horizontal ones from a huffy that im chopping down, they are pretty meaty alot of grinding ahoy! just waiting for them to cool down, they have gotten pretty hot! CurtisRider
This is it for today cos i really need to get my college work done...Cut down the dropouts a load, then welded them in, then decided i need to hack off far more:P will probably trim them more so later, they are so beefy i doubt they will budge.Frames pretty much ready for welding up (needs alot of tidying) , need some cross braces for the stays, and i may weld in a nut so i can run a peg if i get bored
Tom Perkins
Can't wait to see this finished and built up. Will be good to see how long it lasts
Muel
Definately coming together, I've been thinking about doing something similar as I can get steel welded incredibly well for free.Just not aluminium unfortunately. Looks really good! Hope it lasts you mate.

george_seamons
Looks coooool! How much does it weigh so far?
CurtisRider
Cheers guys, hopefully ill have it done mid week. My welding is pretty untidy because im not very well practiced, gonna make use of the flap disc for sure. It currently weighs in at a bit over 5lbs. With the welds and paint on im guessing ill be getting towards the 6lb region which isnt too bad considering! to keep in with the ghettoness of it, i think a brush paint finish is in order
AtOm_AnT
I wish i had such a workshop i am a god at that kind of things really.Oh well i do not have such tools and tubing ant parts that need machining.

CurtisRider
Thanks for all the kind words everyone been rather busy at college, with getting in my final major and stuff so no progress has been made til this morning! For some reason i decided that hand painting the frame with red primer was a good idea...soon had that sanded off and primered her with spray.I also realised that i needed forks so i did some reverse mount ones these were made from the forks off the old red bike i cut up to make the front end of the frame with. And this is how the frame looks after the proper primer, got a little carried away so itll need a touch of sanding before it gets its top coat
