Few methords I have tryed.

try menthals to help you cut down.

Do rollies, more enjoyable and less bad for you

Inhale cigars, gives you a gagging reflex when you put a ciggy in your mouth.

Smoke one after the other till you hate smoking.

Try patches.

Done f**k all for me but might help you. I don't smoke because I need to anymore, just because its something that i enjoy.

Stop.

Actually, there's supposed to be this trick where you squeeze your fingers together whilst thinking of something you want to do less, and then you imagine disgusting things happening to that thing. For me, if I wanted to stop drinking coca-cola, I might imagine someone gobbing in it or taking a piss in it, and then me having to drink it, or for pizza, it being covered in hair and having to eat it anyway. Stuff like that. Anyway, your brain puts them together, so each time you think about smoking you press your fingers together and you get repulsed by it.

Just come up with something strong enough to overcome the nicotine.

Signing up to the marathon and setting myself a ridiculous target helped me.

Is there something you can aim for that is more important to you than smoking? You could do something similar in that case.

Being healthy is a good reason and all that. But all smokers would rather be healthy, but don't stick at quitting because it's hard and we enjoy smoking. Having a specific target set was the only thing that has got me to 6 months smoke free. I tried loads of methods before that and it never worked. Good luck anyway!

Part of it is overcoming the nicotine, part of it is to overcome the routine, of getting home and going for a smoke, or smoking on the way to town or whatever...

If your willpower is strong enough, you need to just catch yourself trying to smoke, and you have to make yourself stop. But that has to be absolute, no 'oh, I'll just have one...'

Best way is not start, its a filthy habit Davey!!!

Revolvers tip is the best, help your mind associate smoking with something horried and/or disgusting and it will make you not want it. Your body will still want that nicotine which is where gum/patches come in, but like everything said you have to actually want to quit and not just feel like you have to.

Sounds like a tame version of A Clockwork Orange, lol.

I started smoking menthols for about a month/2 months then found I could get rid of the urge to smoke by eating mints or chewing minty gum. It didn't completely make me not need a fag but it helped.

Also when your in a pub with your mates like get them to take turns going out for a fag so your not left inside on your own.

I've found that you have to reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally want to quit more than anything. No bullshit 'i'll just have one more' or switching to menthols/rollies. That didn't work for me, I smoke a pouch of golden virginia a day with menthol filters now! Patches did work for me, but you still have to have a bit of willpower of course. Always have something to keep your hands busy aswell, I don't know about anybody else, but its the process you miss as much as the nicotine when you do stop - the whole pulling em out of your pocket, getting one out the pack/rolling one, lighting it, flicking it/putting it in the ashtray etc. Avoid drinking aswell! I hear those Nicorette inhaler thingys are quite good too:)

Someone was telling me they used these pills that make you feel sick and awful when you smoke after taking them, to the extent they had to spend the rest of the day lying in bed 'cos it made them feel so bad. They were a few days in, no idea whether they actually work but you'd imagine so...

I just took a look at some ways to quit as id rather like to. To be fair I dont really have the cash since I quit one of my little jobs plus I just dont see the appeal. My hardest challenge is everyone around me smokes. Everyone I ride with, the misses etc. I did think if I just went out with no cash or cigs it would help, except people offer and it just seems to happen again. I do have an almost time scale for fags sometimes which I dont think helps much. But tonight I have had nothing where as usually Id have had 3 or 4. It just seems to be habbit rather than addiction for me.

Some other things that helped me were reminding myself each time I had the urge to light up, I'd tell myself to wait just 5 minutes. It would go away. A little tougher when you're knocking back beers with your mates, but it's obtainable. Remember, just 5 more minutes. Say it over and over.

Other thing was to take the money I'd spend when I would start to falter and catch myself wanting to buy a pack and tuck the money it away instead. Then go buy something fun after a while. I was surprised what I'd saved after the first 2 weeks or so. Still had to stick to the 5 minute rule to help me through the tough times.

Good luck! It's a hard fight to win every day for the first few weeks. It can be done though.

Most of my friends smoke, making quitting a lot harder.

I've tried on several attempts to stop but to no joy. I just end up getting stressed out about work, bored or simply drinking - all which make me want to smoke again.

The longest I went was 2 weeks, I was amazingly proud of myself but then I had a fag when I was drunk and it all started again.

I'm quitting again after my mates 21st birthday on Sunday - it's a group effort so hopefully this should work better.
