Ali C
welcome to my world (although yours does sound worse!)I have never found a single answer to getting rid of arm pump, but the best thing I did was use a vee brake (as you seem to have found out). That almost got rid of it due to having such a light lever pull.If you really don't want a vee, then you could try my trick of an elastic band around the lever and bar, this makes the brake easier to pull (but slower return, which some people don't like). There's also a good exercise that motocross riders do.........grab a broomstick handle and cut it down to handlebar width, tie a rope around the middle and hand a weight off the bottom. Now hold on to the handle and wind the weight up by twisting the pole away from you. Its very good at pumping your forearms up and if done often can help beat arm pump. eskimo
is it anything to do with me smoking?Yeah. It prevents your muscles getting more oxygen, that applies when you've just had a cigarette. But i wouldn't be surprised if smoking was a contributing factor overall.

hdmackay
You could try bleeding your Magura with water if you haven't already done so. This makes it much easier to pull in.
sstein
The easiest way to solve this is just keep riding and riding until your arms are so built up that it no longer affects you!

Ali C
I only get it riding comps, if you have never ridden one its unlikely you have ever had arm pump....its when the muscles squash the nerves (I think) going to your hands and in effect stops them working, it gets VERY hard to pull the brakes and even hold on to the bars sometimes. The closest thing I can compare it to is when your hands get really cold and you struggle to move your fingers.

Henri
maybe the brake lever position is wrong for you. i got it a few years ago, when my brake lever was positioned really far away, my finger could barely reach it. was going to do a drop off a car at the end of a section, but was scared to even pedalkick because i couldn't hold on. had to take a 5 cuz of that. now my brake lever is closer and haven't had a problem since then. Revolver
I used to get something after riding for a long time, where it becomes painful to either squeeze the brake, or to open my hand, but not to have it closed around the brake. Is that it? lol

imhereithink
I find that after climbing for a few years it takes alot longer for arm pump to set in if at all, only after riding natty for a couple of hours does arm pump happen. Climbing and bouldering are a great way to build up your upper body strength and stamina. Give it a go if possible and see how it works
0zzy
i only seem to get it after doing "sections" so say a sidehop i wont get it then, but long periods of on-off braking i get it mostly on natural though.
