Hasn't 3.0 been around for years?

The USB 3.0 specification was released on November 17, 2008 by the USB 3.0 Promoter Group. It has a transfer rate of up to 10 times faster than the USB 2.0 version and has been dubbed the SuperSpeed USB.

Wiki.

What's the point if you won't be able to connect anything which utilises that speed for the next 10-20 years.

Futureproofing! It won't be that long, I reckon in 5 years or so it'll be relatively mainstream, just like 1gb Ethernet.
