Bolt In Axle Vs. Qr

A quick question if you please....

Ive currently got a king with a standard QR axle using a ti bolt through skewer, there is quite a bit of flex in the back end (ti frame doesnt help) and occasionally I can get the pads to scuff the rim simply through pedalling hard :o

The ti skewer holds the wheel in place fine but the flexiness of titanium is probably not helping the rear end stiffness.

Would switching to an HD axle with funbolts be significantly stiffer?

Anyone got an HD axle and bolts spare that I can borrow to test? :D

Beers in advance

Have you tried it with a steel Shimano squewer? I know they're not that light (:P) and not as pimp as Hope ones, but in my experience they hold way better, and you can crank them up loads. They're likely to be alot stiffer than a ti QR.

Can't really comment on going from non-HD QR to HD bolted, but I've never had any problems with any of the bolted set ups I've ever had.

I should try a shimano skewer in the back and see if it helps, I think ultimately any skewer (5mm rod) is going to be more flexible than a pair of 10/12mm bolts.

I'd say there's a noticable improvement in stiffness going from a QR to a fun bolt setup. Not only will the fun bolts allow a tighter and stronger clamp onto the dropouts, but I can't help thinking they'd help the drop outs to remain perpendicular to the axle far more than a QR setup could

What Im thinking; the skewer is relying on a 4.5mm ti rod to hold the back wheel together, whereas the funnbolts screw into the axle directly and forms a solid tie between the dropouts. Now where is the best place to get an HD kit from? :D

edit: looks like aspire are cheapest, about 90 quid for the kit.

i can't help thinking in my mind that it won't make much difference...i know exactly what you mean about the pad rubbing when you pedal and i always put it down to loose-ish spokes (you tried tightening them?) and flexy frames..

apart from that HD axles and funbolts are sweeeet.

Spokes are pretty tight, drive side is about as tight as I dare go before they start binding up, perhaps I should just spunk up the money and prepare to have a bike thats 40g heavier :D
