Scott Gibbs
Can anyone explain which is better and why?? Thankssplined are better because there is more interface between crank and bottom bracket axle, thus giving a stiffer crank for more positive drive. Hope that helped. Muel
Isis are stiffer, stronger and lighter, but more expensive.Square are heavier, weaker and more flexible, but very cheap.Just in my experience, there will be exceptions but just a general rule.Where abouts in cheshire are you from mate? I'm from just inside Derbyshire, about 5 miles from Marple.
ogre
isis bearings tend to be shite, but it's better to munch bearings every now an then than have axles snapping etc, plus square tapers can be rounded if your not careful with them, isis are more resilient. forteh
ISIS is a flawed system, after you have removed the crank arm a couple of times the splines wear and you get sloppiness in there giving crank arm wobble. The only way to rectify this is to shim out the spline once it wears enough to do so. Yes the axle is stiffer by nature of being a larger diameter.Square taper will always pull up tight (unless you b0rked your crank tapers) and there is no crank wobble.I run square taper and will continue to do so without worrying about it
Connor Powell
I've always felt alot safer using isis, Sqaure tapers are too weak.

I've had my burns on and off loads of times while trying to solve the self loosening BB, and the Monty TIs on my mod because I kept rebuilding the freewheel every couple of months. You run square taper because you've got that daft Hope bb designed for road bikes and it works out lighter than an ISIS set-up. Pfft Its lighter than anything else out there, Ive never snapped a BB before (UN72 hollow XT) and this is stronger than a UN72 Actually when I used to ride trials on my chameleon back in 98/99 I had a dura race BB, cracked a ball in that after a particularly heavy landing, axle was fine though
