Renault Clio Gearbox Problem

Hi, a friend's gearbox recently bust on his 51 plate clio. I said that i'd put a new one in for him.. he went off and bought a gearbox (paid 100 quid, its got the same code as his engine, although it's out a 55 plate clio)... anyway, as ive just got this new gearbox onto the engine and im ready to put the driveshafts in, i notice that on the passenger side, the design of where the driveshaft fits is different to that of my friends old gearbox. The design inside is the same, so i had a go at fitting the shaft but due to the new gearbox's design causing the driveshaft seating to petrude more than the old gearbox, the driveshaft sticks out too much and as a result i cannot connect the bottom arm to the two bolts above.

Obviously my friend doesn't want to pay for another gearbox, i was just wondering if there's anyway i could get around this (new driveshaft) etc. Or maybe the bottom arm just needs to be levered as it is a tight fit?

Any help is greatly appreciated! My friend needs his car sorted asap for travelling to work and back.

Just had a check, does anyone know if the seat where the driveshaft sits can be swapped over?

If your good enough to attempt to replace a gear box you should good enough to work out a simple driveshaft matter.

Man up and go learn some skills to pay the bills.

i think your problem is, it's french!!!!!

Having spent 45 minutes in a french tin can this evening, I can totally assure you that's the issue. frenchness is a very common fault in most french cars, and sadly, it's not something that can be fixed.....

Check yellow pages for your local breakers yard, they should be able to take it from you for a small fee :)

Yeah, my mum has that problem with her Peugeot. Shame really... :(

Best thing to do is contact dealer/motorfactors and find out if they changed them at all, does seem odd if they have the same part numbers though! hopefully itll be a simple case of a shorter driveshaft and its sorted :)

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a change between them.

Your talking a 4 year gap between models, there will have been a good few changes to the car somwhere in that time, was there a change of shape or style to the car?

And of course, any little change in one area have knock on changes throughout the car, so the part in question might not have changed, everything else might have.

I know nothing on the mechanics side of cars but know from selling parts and spares that is is essential to look up parts by correct car info (year, engine size, petrol or diesel etc).

Thanks for the help everyone. Can't believe you found that site hahah, set it up ages ago because someone (think it was the person here who said his friend does it) mentioned it so I thought I'd have a go :lol:

Anyway, turns out it was the cup that the driveshaft sits in had come out as it didn't have a circlip on it. I just pushed it back into place and put a circlip on it and it's fine now :)

Ill ask my mate tomoz on my engineering course. He pretty much knows everything about the two new versions of clio's having put a 2.0 16v engine in his 1.2 shell :P. Does the haynes manual say anything? Is the gearbox off the same engine too? Obviously different displacement engines have different ratios and maybe completely different boxes too?
