my left crank keeps coming off when i ride, I've tried tightening the bolt but didn't work.

its a square taper and i think that the taper has gone.. ive only just bought them and cant afford new ones.

does any body now how to sort this out, anything even if its stupid i just need it to stay on for a while until i can buy a new one

Erm... what cranks are they?

But you have probably rounded them off.

Cut a coke can up into small strips. Place them onto the BB axle and wedge the crank arm on and tighten up. Should work.

I could explain in more detail but i can't be bothered to i'm sure someone else will.

It's going to be the bolt that holds the crank on the axle which must be coming loose, the threads must have gone, you could try some loctite on the threads but on something as high-load as a crank this probably won't last for long.

If you're lucky, it might just be the crank bolt thread that's stripped, you can pick them up for a couple quid from your lbs. If not, you'll need a new crank arm.

That's a possibility too for sure. Good point. Just be sure not to use the maximum strength loctite (or similar brand). Go for the medium duty stuff. The maximum strength is as advertised and could very well lead to the crank bolt becoming a permanent part of your bottom bracket. I know from experience. :giggle:

Not quite, when the crank arm rounds it means the interface between crank and bb does not have a tight fit, this allows a small amount of movement, this pushes against the bolt and causes it to loosen. The more the bolt loosens the more the crank wobbles. The best temporary fix is to use a strip of coke can like already has been said.

ULTIMATE n00b comment?

If you had kept your head in your arse for a little bit longer I was waiting for a reply.

If it's thinner its just got more chance of stripping again, hence why you use a coke or even pepsi can which is thicker.

I had the same problem with my set :( i ended up getting new cranks and bb which in the long run turned out better :) But i dont really have any help, the only way this can have happened is by riding with the crank loose, square taper cranks even when just slightly loose are very easy to do this with.

Another solution if its really bad is copper pipe.

Trim a length, then using metal cutters slice it in half on one side, flatten it out into a sheet and use the same strip technique.

It works exactly the same, but better than using loads of can strips if really bad.
