Why Not British Cycling?

Facts:

--I am not riding observed trials anymore, however I am and always will be a fan and a supporter of trials.

--I have recently made friends with members of British Cycling here in Manchester.

--British cycling is flush with money, infrastructure, and enthusiasm for developing British cycling talent to compete internationally.

Questions:

Why is observed bicycle trials in the UK under the same organizational umbrella of Moto-trials (the ACU? is this accurate?)

(edit- the AMCA)

Why is observed bicycle trials in the UK not under the organizational umbrella of British Cycling?

UCI trials is connected with british cycling (they pick the team for the world Champs and have the entry forms for the world cups). but it would be nice if they gave us a little more support, like flights and hotels for the World Champs (like they do for DH,4X and XC) and it would be nice not to have to pay for the UK team kit too.

Okay, so British cycling has some involvement with the pro-level end of things.

But why has observed trials in the UK opted against having British Cycling involved in lower level riding-- the British Trials Cup for instance?

I think if everyone got together and did boycott the world championships not the world cup it might have an effect. In my opinion someone like sam oliver is likely to pick up some junior medals at the ucis in the next few years. british cycling will claim money based on the medals the whole gb cycling team but then wont give any of it to our top riders.

Reading around on the Biketrial Federation webpage, I see that British Cycling does have some involvement in UK observed trials.

I think I need to talk to my buddies again to clarify with what administration and organization British Cycling is and is not involved. I thought I understood it after a conversation today, but I guess I don't.

There are two branches of observed trials in the UK.

BikeTrial UK is the UK's representative of BIU (BikeTrial International Union) which has "delivered" itself to the ACU (Auto Cycle Union). See here and here. They run events to BIU rules. Every rider MUST buy an ACU licence to be able to ride in their British and Club events, and every rider MUST buy an ACU licence before they can buy a BIU Licence. Why?

The Biketrial Federation UK is independent of any such authority. They are working with British Cycling, with their event results being used for World Championship team selection. See here. No licences are required to ride in any Biketrial Federation event, ie the British National Trials Cup / Championship.

On the "UCI World Championship British Selection Policy" you will see, for the first time this year, "British Cycling will pay for the cost of appropriate team clothing for all riders and staff. A Team Manager and Assistant Team Manager will be appointed and a nominal payment will be awarded for both roles".

We're getting there gradually.

Very few trials riders take part in organised events, ie average of 60 per event over the last 2 years (at both club and national level). Perhaps if more riders participated in observed trials the sport would be taken more seriously and more funding may be made available.

I think one of the reasons many riders dont participate in comps is done to the fact that there is two governing bodies which causes alot of confusion. Back in 2007 this was a big factor in me deciding not to ride many competitions. It is something that has to be solved for the good of the sport. I think those organising while they do a great job in the actual organisation of the events need do think and do whats best for the sport. The future has to be more competitions in more accesible places such as Blackpool and Fort William World Cup then maybe we wil be talen more seriously.

not inaccessable at all, just enter and turn up, its really not hard. most entry forms are available online, and most comps are advertised on here! directions to the events are easily available, so i really dont see how more accesable it can be.

even down to the fact that with federation trials you dont need any licence's so just entry fee, and your away.

and just because its a comp doesent mean you have to take it very seriously, just see it as a chalange to ride it, and have fun doing it. dont worry about beating other people, just see if you can better your riding over the corse of the day, etc.

as for british cyclings envolvement, im unsure exactly what they do and dont do,

This might be slightly off-topic but has anyone noticed that magazines like MBUK dont feature trials when they do a report on world cup/world champ events? They only seem to feature DH, 4X and XC. \I personally think there should be more coverage of top level trials comps.

that wont happen as they dont know any top riders, the riders they cover are has bins, and new top riders never get a look in..
