paulrockliffe
I've just picked up a MongooseTransfer trials frame very cheap, have been building it up for a few days, but have run into a problem; it has an 83mm bottom bracket shell! I can't find many bottom bracket/crank combinations that'll fit, and none that I can afford. I'm hoping its a trials thing and you'll be able to point me in the direction of what I'm after?I'm not after anything special, just a single ring set of cranks, bash guard I'm not bothered about, and a bottom bracket that'll fit the frame. Anyoen got any good answers?Cheers.
sstein
Are you sure it is 83mm as that seems a bit odd. The normal size is 68mm and occasionaly 73mm. If it is 73mm I would recomend a half decent isis bb like a truvativ one and any set of isis cranks, go for middleburns if you can get the money, you won't regret it. I've got loads of bottom brackets and cranks lying around for a regular bottom bracket, or a square taper 83mm bottom bracket, but can't find one anywhere. My research has lead me here:http://www.mtb-direct.co.uk/cgi-bin/index....TEM080320122022and http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/107880.htmlBut don't want to spend so much cash! Plus the cranks are dual ring, which I don't really want. Bah!I was hoping 83mm was a more usual size on trials bikes and someone could point me to a trials orientated bike shop? Revolver
Trials bikes are all 68. You could trim it down and retap it if there's space. 5mm on each side would let you run a truvativ one. Extra 2.5mm for 68mm. You might need a long axle though, to make up for the loss of shell size.

sstein
I looked these up on line and they do normally come with the truvative bb howitzer bb, which you have already said you cant afford, unfortunately that is the cheapest 83mm bb that I know about as they are (supposed to be) only for use on big hit dh bikes so your options are limited. I would say to save up and go for the truvativ, you will never need to replace it!
