Some Advice Needed...

Hi guys, ive been riding trials for almost a year, and im a fast learner, my riding has come on leaps and bounds. Now though, i cant seem to get anywhere with it. My XC riding has gone to the next level, getting tuition from a certain Clive Forth (of course i have been riding MTB for nearly 3 years) but i cant seem to push on with my trials riding. I think its the 'fear factor' i get when i try something bigger, i get the fear im going to mess it up somehow. I'd like to be able to tap/hook bigger walls and drop off them, but as i psych myself up for it, i back out at the last minute. I just came out of hospital over a month ago due to an MTB related accident, i think the fear of screwing up is holding me back.

Please help me out because i would like to get my trials riding to another stage come summer when i'll be heading to places like Glasgow and Edinburgh to ride. Any riding tips especially for taps and/or hook-ups and general advice would be great.

people don't realize what a mental sport trials is (mental as in thinking, not crazy).

It sounds like you are having a battle with your fear in your head. I feel it takes two things to become good, skills and the positive mental attitude to make your self push and go for the bigger/harder/scarier things.

Obviously there are limits. I wouldn't advise people to too far out of their comfort/skill zone but next time you go out, just think positive. you CAN tap/hook/drop higher, you WILL tap/hook/drop higher. Just go out with that attitude and you will be surprised what you can do.

Oh, the other thing you need to do is just PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! The more time you spend on the bike, the more comfortable and braver you will become

i reckon you need to trust both yourself and your bike 100% ive revamped my bike completly so i can "trust" it as there were bits ready to brake on it,its worked to an extent i can gap further and drop higher just need more practice at taps and hooks!

shin pads helmet are a good start for confidence building i got a pair of mx shin and nee pads cant complain there! just struggling on finding a helmet a like at a price i like!

another thing to add to that is to ride with someone that wants to do the same,my mate i ride with is always trying to better me which in turn pushes me to try to better him although we rode bout 4-5 years back we have come on leeps and bounds in the last month or so we have been riding.

Don't think...do!!! the more you faf and think about what could go wrong..it'll go wrong!!!

if you just go for it and it goes wrong...work on what went wrong and get it right!

if you don't thinks it's posible..don't do it!!! but if you get that feelin (even a little inklin) you can, ride that feeling and go for it.

try doing the moves you can till you can do them with you eyes closed.....then go that little bit bigger.

besides the point (not aimed at you Dan):- I hate it when people bitch 'i can't do that'...when they never put the effort to try it!!!

My mate Ed is a daemon on any type of bike, and I once asked him after he had done a massive drop in a quarry (On his full suss bike) how he got the balls to do things and he said, "Well I'm gonna do it some time so I might as well do it now", this has really helped me to do things, cos he's right. If you want to see yourself doing these things in the future you gotta start doing them now, hesitate and your knackered.

I remember as a kid learning to drop in on a 6ft halfpipe on my BMX, it took me all day, just standing on the platform shiteing it. When it was time to go home, I thought just do it, and I did, and it was piss. I was chuffed to bits, but gutted that I hadn't done it at the beginning of the day, because I could have been riding all day and we weren't coming back to the next week.

So the moral of the story is "Do it now, because your only going to do it later on so you may as well do it now."

Or something.....

I'm just in the same condition like you.

I ride almost 1 and a half years and everyday I go for riding I tend to do the same lines and climb the same objects because of the ''fear''

I have become confort with all the trials basics such as sidehops, pedalhop etc...but I just don't try to get onto higher obstacles.

And the times I do I realise that it wasn't so difficult and I can push myself further...

I'm trying to deal with that problem but I haven't succeed yet.

I was talking with a skillful skateboarder yesterday and he told me to visualise my self achieving going higher...to create an image in my head with me doing the move...something like that....

I think that I will follow what he and Ali said!

You must trust yourself and just try higher...

iv found riding in a group helps me push my riding, as they help push you on and give you the confidence to try new things. And as has been said believe you can do these moves, if you dont then youve already failed (Y) With that said get through to edinburgh one weekend, we'll show you around :)

Hey thanks every one. I do tend to visualise myself doing something bigger or even spotting a line i havent seen before and visualising myself doing it. Doesnt always work though. Still, i might as well get my arse off the computer right now and get out there and PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE! (Y)
