Single Speed Problems

i converted my bike to single speed because the gears i ran became unreliable, any way.

everynow and again (on a couple of gaps today, quite scary) the chain jumped off the rear sprocket, now it isnt constantly happening, justin on a rare occasion.

could it be i havnt alined my rear sprocket with my front one?

if that is the case is there a measurement any one can give me so i can sort it out?

What chain are you running? Because some chains need to be put on a certain direction, like the KMC kool chains.

If the chain is'nt on correctly it can jump/skip. But if this is'nt the case then tension could also be a factor.

Hope this helps.

ive got a tensioner

and its all working its just the chain jumps off every now and again

If your cog is shark toothed it could be causing the cain to skip, look and see if the teeth look like sharks teeth, if so, buy a new cog.

If your running a rear cog that is 14T (maybe) or 13T or 12T and you are running a single wheel tensioner then you might not be getting enough chain rap (i.e. the chain is not over sufficient teeth on the rear cog to prevent it skipping).

How old is your chain? They stretch in time so may be causing it to jump over the cog. If you chain is old think about getting a new chain.

Check the tension you are getting from your tensioner. It may not be adequate. This may particularly be the case if it is unsprung and slipped.

Make sure that the chain is the correct width for the cog and visa versa.

Cant think of anything else off the top of my head

Night!

Are you running one gear but still with a full cassette or a singlespeed sprocket? If you've a full cassette that may be the problem. I'd check the chainline first and then look for stiff links and especially twisted/impact damaged links in the chain. If there isn't enough chain wrap, the chain/sprocket is worn, the tension is low or the chain/sprocket combination isn't ideal (BMX chain on 9 speed cassette sprockets isn't great, 8 or 9 speed chain on singlespeed sprockets will often jam) you'll get problems.

cheers for the help guys.I got the hump with it and went out and bought a single speed conversion kit and now everything seems to be working fine so i can only assume the cog was a bit shagged :giggle:

ive had a good look at it though and it seems alright. what with my age though my eyes might be playing tricks on me
