Rich Pearson
I know the D521 was discontinued a while ago, but I'm fairly sure Mavic just rebranded it as something else (or at least something very similar).Anyone happen to know what it is?Rich

Alex Dark
721 is a higher grade thus more expensive rim than the 521 ( 21 denoting width in mm, 7 denoting quality / price )They only make the ex721 now...as said above.
JonMack
So the 121 was really shit then, even though it was the same as the 521, and the 721? Edited April 1, 2009 by JonMack

LEON
121 is nothing like a 521, It's slightly narrower, shallower and eyelts are much bigger inside. i have an unused one 121 has much beefier eyelets that go right inside through both walls. And a d521 is 28.5mm wide, not 21 Leon Edited April 1, 2009 by LEON
Luke Rainbird
The "17", "19", "21" etc is the internal width, so you need to factor in the sidewalls into the overall outer width. Much like a DX32 is 38mm wide
LEON
Well that's just stupid and misleading lolLeon
psycholist
Not if you're trying to work out what width a tyre will be when you move to a rim of a different width - some XC frames back in the 90s couldn't take anything bigger than 1.9" tyres, even on rims that are pretty narrow by modern standards (I had the misfortune to own one of them )... With Canti brakes the outside width of a rim is pretty irrelevant as they'll accommodate pretty much any rim width, and that was all that was available when the naming convention was devised.
