DannyBaz
Hey, i popped my freewheel the other day, and bought a replacement off tarty bikes (acs claw 18t) and it has just come. But the problem is, i cant get my old freewheel off. Because it was popped, the chain ring piece has already dropped off, and i have just the screw on bit left attached to the tensile cranks. Also, i don't have a freewheel tool. Can anyone help me with this? Is there a way to remove this piece without tools ? Thanks

Headley
What make of freewheel is your old one? I've got a tool, so I might be able to remove it for you.
LiamWood!
If all the internals of the freewheel are off, just clamp up whats left in a vice get a fairly long steel tube (scafoulding bar will do the job) slide it over the end of the crank arm and turn.Should come off fairly easy, also what freewheel did you have before? WIGAN
If clamping it in the vice and turning the crank wont work, heat it up with a blow torch or summert then try it .

DannyBaz
My old bike how did you break it ?Don't know, was just riding and it all fell apart
ding_dong
sounds like the lockring had come loose whilst riding it causing the internals, and outer for that matter to fall off, its a common fault with acs freewheels, where as the tensile has a reverse thread on the lockring as its specialy made to be used on the front, so all it will do during riding, if anything, is tighten
Headley
I havn't got the right tool to remove it but I know a couple of people that might have one. Edited April 1, 2009 by Headley
DannyBaz
I havn't got the right tool to remove it but I know a couple of people that might have one.Ok, thanks Headley.. i might not need it now though.. i have put it in the freezer like that guy said to. sstein
If it is slipping when you turn i, you need to tighten the vice up more. I do this all the time. I have even done it with working freewheels and it worked.
Annihilation
Either bolt the tool to the crank arm, put the tool in the vice and a tube on the crank and turn, OR, put the crank arm in the vice, bolt the tool on, and use a massive wrench. That should do the trick You need a vice that's not going to move, mine is loose, which is useless. You could also just cut the old freewheel off with an angle grinder, but you must be careful doing this, not to wreck the threads.
Dave!
I once cut a freewheel off with an angle grinder, went into the threads but they still worked. Would'nt recommend it though. Why not just take it to your LBS and get them to do it. They normally have more tools and the workspace, and its just easier. Mr Motivator
If you're really stuck, take apart the freewheel, grind flats on either sides of the internals, then clamp that in the vice. It's a bodge, but every question has an answer.
