monkeyseemonkeydo
If you find grips actually painful you might be doing something wrong... Only thing I can suggest is get some thick/soft grips to try.

Mark W
http://pijin.co.uk/grips/sueloTuboGrip.jsp These are also pretty good. Cut 'em down to the right length and there you go.
Dave!
Trialtech foam grips are the best I've ever used, they last much longer then other foam grips and they are thicker, so it achually feels like a grip instead of a slightly cushioned handlebar. So, I'd recommend Trialtech foams. P.S: The more you ride with them the more cushiony they become. Edited March 31, 2009 by Dave!

monkeyseemonkeydo
What do you mean and i have the soft tarty raffle ones Well the rest of the world manages to ride fine with a whole host of grips- thin, thick, soft, hard (ooh err) without a problem. When you say it's painful do you mean you get blisters or what?

Dan6061
Another vote for ODI Longnecks here. They don't really wear out, they just squish down. Really comfy grips! Ritchey foam grips are nice too, they're a lot thicker than normal foam grips. I think Wiggle still sell them...

trialschallenger
have you tried to use racing grips?there really long and made of foam, and from what i remember there quite strechable and you could easily double them up.failing that get some racing bike handle bar tape rap that round and then place the foam grips onto that i think that'd hit the spot. Captain Scarlet
Try-All foams. They last for a ridiculously long time, and are damn comfy.I ride gloveless (only wear gloves when it is freezing winter weather), I get pain from the blisters on my hand after a long days ride, but aside from that they are perfect.Initially going from gloves to no gloves will be painful, just stick with it and you'll soon get used to riding without.
