Gandalf the Yellow
there may be a few threads around on broadband, but the problem i have at home is we used to get 512kb (slow as) and never have been able to get an upgrade cos the distance from exchange is too far or something. and since last year the download speed have dropped significantly (as slow as 56k speeds) whereas uploads remain the same and hasn't gotten any better for a good while now (not even due to busy times of day etc)..pretty sure there's nothing wrong with home set up and router as we haven't touched them at all and the speed just suddenly decided to drop.doesn't matter how many times i ring up BT to complain the problem is still there, so i was looking into alternative ways to get broadband for the house, i know people will automatically say 'virgin media' with cable but my area unfortunately doesn't support it... so what can i do to get an half decent speed without using adsl or cable connections? i'm used to faster broadband at uni but i can live with 512kb... i just need it for when i finish uni for the summer.steve
JonMack
http://www.broadband-advisor.co.uk/broadband-checker.aspxMight be worth checking something like that. Edited March 18, 2009 by JonMack
Gandalf the Yellow
these are either cable or adsl providers... i was wondering if anyone knows any ISP that doesn't use either of those to connect to the internet.steve
David
What about a 3G connection? Although you may not get coverage its worth trying. You can also get a satellite connection but there ££££.

You can buy pay as you go and contract ones. Ive just realized your after a faster connection, Im not sure what speeds you can get at the moment but its worth checking. JonMack
A 3G connection is likely to be a lot slower than your current connection, you also get stupid useage limits, like 1gb per day or something, I dunno how much you're online though but it's probably fairly easy to go over 1gb a day if you spend any time on youtube or watching vids on here. Gandalf the Yellow
are there no such thing as a 'true' wireless broadband available with decent speeds then? does sound like 3g is a bit slow, how slow im not sure but to be honest its about 10kbps at the moment... reminds me of the 56k age.steve
