1337 Trials
Is a 16t sprocket on the rear with a 18t freewheel on the front to easy? Im thinking of getting a 15t sprocket if the 16t will give a very easy gear.
Papa Manual
That's a hard question to answer. It depends on your style of riding, whether you ride street or natural etc. I use 18:13 for street and I find it too easy.
1337 Trials
I want it to be the same as 18:12 on a mod...
forteh
18:16 on mod? You will be pedalling like mad everywhere Common mod gearing is 18:12 I believe, common stock gearing is 18:16 with short (165) cranks or 18:15 with long (175) cranks.edit: according to sheldon brown gearing calculator 18:16 on 26" is about the same a 18:12 on 20".This is assuming youre keeping the same crank length as that makes a massive difference to gearing feel. MikeCottTrials
Normal on a mod is 18:12you can get a 13t from tarty though, if your wanting a slightly lighter gear
Jason222
I want it to be the same as 18:12 on a mod...Did no one else read this?18:16 with 170's on a stock.
forteh
Did no one else read this?Yup, after I had finished typing my reply Personally I use 16:14 on 165 cranks which is near enough the same as 18:15 on 175 cranks.
Jamie_Neal
I'm a fan of 18:16 with 170mm cranks. My knees can't cope with 18:15.
1337 Trials
As the wheel im hopefully buying has a 16t cog on the rear and i have cranks to buy ile buy 175mm cranks and ile use the 16t cog allready with the wheel then or should I get shorter cranks? Either way you will adjust to the new gearing with alittle time
1337 Trials
I do have a gym routine etc so ide rather have a stiffer gearing is possible eg 18:12 on a mod is what I used to run. I think ile get 170mm cranks with a 15t cog on the rear and run the 18t tensile freewheel on the front...

1337 Trials
Ile get these then ISIS 165mm http://tartybikes.co.uk/product.php?produc...category_id=
Jason222
run 175's if you run 18:15. 170's with 18:16. I don't think a harder gear has any real benefit in trials, as you can't hit the drivetrain with the same speed...Likewise...if you're using a harder gear so you can pedal up higher, then you should probably reassess your pedal up technique... forteh
Likewise...if you're using a harder gear so you can pedal up higher, then you should probably reassess your pedal up technique...I was finding that with 18:16, was too slow for my tapping and rear wheel technique tried switching to 18:15 with the 165s and found it better for taps but just a touch too hard.Gone to 16:14 which is halfway between the 2 and adjusted my pedalling alittle and I can gap further, tap and backwheel higher than I could before (although 40" isnt very high for a back wheel :$ )

forteh
Are you using a half stroke or full stroke?I couldnt half stroke tap with 18:15 but Im learning with with 16:14, not as high but getting better

It's a much more effective technique, and it allows you to run a much lighter gearing.
forteh
Do you know how to full stroke tap? It's a much more effective technique, and it allows you to run a much lighter gearing.Yeah, I could full stroke tap beforehand, either way going to a lighter gearing has helped my taps tremendously - before the front just didnt lift fast enough so I was putting the power in too early which meant that I didnt get much upwards advantage; dropping to 16:14 has meant that my tapping speed has slowed down alot and I can still put power into it yay
