Took Forks And Stem Off, Now Won't Go Back?!

Ok so I ground my rims (Yes rims, I only done the rear first but the front was SO bad done that too!) and had to go for a ride. I have a 2 seater car so took the forks and stem off to get the bike in.

Got to the location, put the bike back but the forks wobbled about! Spent 20 minutes and gave up so now I'm here...

Whats wrong?!

1.Take it to pieces and check you have everything.

2.Put everything on in the correct order.

3.tighten the stem up.

4. then tighten up the top cap.

Make sure its tight enough. Then check it if that doesn't work then I don't know because the same thing happened to my bike and that's what i did.

I always thought you tightend the top cap before you tightend the stem bolts, as doesn't the top cap pushes the stem down and holds the headset together thightly?

I'm sure thats correct.

Maybe thats what he was doing wrong :ermm:

Try it again if you were and do the top cap up first. (Y)

I don't know It worked with me and that's what I had been told at the time.

Josh.

always tighten the top cap BEFORE the stem bolts, else the top-cap is just pulling against the force of the stem bolts, kind of like trying to tighten up chain tugs while the wheel nuts/bolts are tight

The spacers are Hope and never had a problem with them before.

I did tighten the stem before the top cap, I shall try the other way tomorrow :)

Just feels like a broom handle in a well, don't see how it was tight before. Will update tomorrow.

Nothings ever easy...

Cheers guys

Its highly likely that during the forks being out of the bike youve lost some pieces of the headset.

crown race? top race? wedge? etc

If you have, tip for the future -- when taking forks out of a frame for transportation, use a zip-tie through the headtube to keep all the headset bits together and in the right order too

cheers josh

Always tighten your top cap before stem bolts.

As you wont have anything to tighten. If you tighten your side bolts then start to tighten your top cap, your stem will be locked into position so wont move up or down, it needs to be slack, to push down on top of your headset. Once it is tight then line up your stem to your front wheel, then tighten your side bolts up.

See how that goes, hope iv'e helped.

Sweeeeet, sorted.

Cheers guys, was like you said, had to do the top cap up first THEN the stem

Had an awesome ride, no where near as good as I used to be but I'm making progress every day. Will get some photos tomorrow.

Thanks again x
