Over The Top School Uniform

Do most schools in UK have uniforms, I'm from Canada and only a few schools have them, mostly private schools. Most things you guys are saying seem so bloody outrageous that if they would be put those rules in place right now here, there would be a few riots/teachers kicked in the face.

They tried introducing them over here and there were quite a lot of demonstrations. But the idea was forced through and implemented. This was a couple of years ago, I haven't seen a single kid in a uniform yet.

I wore a uniform back in the UK, didn't give a shit about it. It was completely normal, apart from the fact you had a few identical sets of clothes.

Yeah, I think so. Certainly almost all primary schools (age 5-11), and most secondary schools (11-16) will make you wear uniform, although how strictly they enforce it varies a LOT. For sixth form/college (Age 16-18+) it's split, but I'd guess that most places would let you wear your own clothes.

Like just about everything in the UK, it's a class thing. People think that a uniform makes people, well, more uniform - the idea being that pupils will get treated the same no matter how much money they have. Although schools that are a bit more posh are more likely to have a strict policy on school uniform, so work that one out?!

We questioned the point of a uniform in school many times, usually with two answers;

As Tom said, its more standardization for pupils. If they let kids where what they wanted it would result in bullying towards the kids that perhaps couldn't afford designer clothes and when people did wear designer clothing it would only be ruined by certain lessons (ie. chemistry).

Secondly was what Inur suggested, teaching pupils how to dress and look (somewhat) respectable. Using my job for example, if I turned up with baggy jeans, trainers and some tshirt on I'd be sent home; and I'm sure it'd be commented on if I turned up with a tie half down my chest and my shirt untucked.

my headteacher seems a tad racist, she's fine with any student but myself wearing a religious symbol.

I think you're just a bit confused there.

You're there to learn, not promote your delusional ideas of an all powerful sky fairy.

To be fair though, i don't recall any arguments or bullying going on around me while i was at school and able to wear my own clothes. The amount of kids you'd think would wear the coolest clothes usually wore standard no-name stuff and nobody cared.

Yet at primary and secondary school where uniforms were a must people got bullied because of the shoes they wore :blink:
