middleageman
Hello all. My name is middleageman.I only discovered the sport of Trials in December, through sheer chance and I was immeadiately interested. Now, having cycled a lot in my youth, (but, pretty much, abused my body for the last decade or so!) I was sort of thinking about a change of lifestyle, looking for something I hadn't yet tried as a hobby, maybe even regain some fitness, something 'new', (to me at least). So, there before me, was a sport, a movement, a scene. Unheard of by anyone I have spoken to."Trials!", that's the one for me, I decided. After a couple of nights 'google'ing and browsing, I discovered this rich font of information, knowledge and passionate people, collectively known, as the 'trials-forum'!Being new to any type of forum whatsoever, I made a heartfelt post and hoped for the best. With joy, I received some replies! Not only that, but kind and encouraging words, and a notification that I had been madea full member. It was only later on, after reading the guidelines/rules and also gaining knowledge from reading various othernew members posts, that I realised how grateful I should be.With my newfound confidence, I posted a few typical 'Newbie' questions regarding a choice of bike, the differences between them and suitability to myself and have received many, detailed, considered and wise responses for which I am extremely grateful. I've also learnt how to use the 'search' feature and discovered a wealth of knowledge, opinions and facts which are truly beneficial. Now, this above opening statement, might sound like I'm licking the skid marks off the forums ...... tires!I'm not. This is truly how I've enjoyed it so far. But, the whole point of this rambling, self indulgent introduction is this,as a complete 'Newbie', with not even a bike, yet being a full member,I find I'm flitting between NMC and Trials Chat constantly. If I post my beginners questions in the NMC, I receive some helpful replies, (although mainly from full members) and of coursehave to wade through some of the younger members cross-talk and banter - although it can be fun sometimes! But it has been suggested I move to the full members forum, because I should. Now, of course I've read many of the topics/posts on here, but a lot of them seem to be quite advanced and technical questions that are asked. It's isn't that i'm not gaining valuable knowledge of the ones I've understand so far, it's more to do with 'a divide'.Personally, I find myself in 'no-mans land'. I want to put my 'Newbish' questions to the more expirienced members, but see others try and simply get told 'this or that question' has been asked many times before and get pointed to the search bar.Which of course, your database, holds all anyone would need if starting out/ intermidiate or quite expirienced.I suppose the point I'm trying to make is,Isn't this a forum?A place where questions are raised, knowledge is passed, ideas are discussed, evaluated and reconsidered. But please realise, that I've not raised this topic for myself, I'm not looking for any sympathy or reassurence, I'm not posting to critisise.I was just interested if anyone had any thoughts on my commentsand maybe to remind people of when they were new to Trials-Forum and wondered how they felt! middleageman. Luke Rainbird
Haha, to some extent I knew what to expect on reading too and was pleasantly proved right I've got to admit to not venturing into NMC so often of late, but for a good couple of years I was in there as much as the main forum. Don't forget that pre members are still able to read 90% of the forum, just without being able to post anywhere but NMC. I'm sure you understand the reasons for this, but also the frustrations it can bring to both the pre members that deserve to be 'let loose', and the full members constantly responding to the same questions. It's never going to be an easy one to solve, though the way things are done at present are pretty good. On the most part, people just need to take a step back before they post lairy replies to generic weekly questions and the like, and think before they post - put yourselves into the other persons shoes and see how you make yourself, and the trials community, come across. At the end of the day, to some extent at least, we are all ambassadors for the sport and that goes both here and on rides/in the public eyeHelp each other, help the sport, and in turn you're helping yourselves

JT!
Erm, what's the question again?
Krisboats
I knew... Before I even opened this, that it'd be a long story full of brown-nosing and clichés.Brilliant, for an opening reply into a well written and genuine thread that's a fantastic response. Congratulations! Anyway, don't be afraid to post up questions you might feel are fairly noobish. If you've had a quick search but not turned anything up then including that you've done so in your initial post usually deters the people who'll try and nitpick and those who just try to be as unnecessarily twatish as they can, like the post i quoted above.Don't ever be worried to ask for help and if you feel something is too complex ask for it to be explained again in a way that's easier for you to get your head around. We've all been there and had to learn at some point and you will never be the only person who doesn't know about what you need help with so you should never feel like your alone. Jitters
"It's isn't that i'm not gaining valuable knowledge of the ones I've understand so far, it's more to do with 'a divide'."I see your point. I'm in the same place. Some stuff seems so simple and then other topics are still so far out for me. Like some others have suggested above - good suggestins there. Hanging out with some other riders is definitely gonna speed things up for you.Don't get discouraged. The terms and talk in between will become apparent as you look into relevant posts and glean bit of good info here and there. Just like it's starting to for me.Hope this helps!Oh, and get a trials bike already! Cheers and go get 'em!
bigamac
I didn't read it. But didn't you post this before? Edited February 7, 2009 by bigamac
eskimo
If I post my beginners questions in the NMC, I receive some helpful replies, (although mainly from full members) and of coursehave to wade through some of the younger members cross-talk and banter - although it can be fun sometimes! To true. You should also take note that rider ability can't be directly associated with anything on the forum. Hence the real mixture of people, it's hard to tell what people are actually like. Al_Fel
It does my head in when people have a go at someone for posting something again or asking a question thats been asked a million times. I think instead of having a go they should find the answer for someone either through the search or through memory. I've used the search for myself before and its not always as quick and easy as some people make it out to be.Edit: And another thing if something has been posted before as is old to you there still are so many new members that it might be worth bringing back up for them to have a look at. Ash-Kennard
yeah right, the search is a little fanny, especially when you're looking for a particular topic

r2wtrials
I am fairly new back into biketrial myself and over the 6 or 7 years i stopped it had changed so much i recognised almost nothing about the sport. Best thing is to ask away and ignore the tossers that just like the sound of their own keyboard. Somewhere amongst the dross you will always get the experienced riders or helpful newbies who will give you what you want.If you were to take away every question or answer that has already been given before you would only get about 30 post a day on here... aener
If you were to take away every question or answer that has already been given before you would only get about 30 post a day on here...Exactly my thoughts. It's not even annoying I find... It just makes the newbies think you're really clever - which should make you feel good about yourself Bigamac:" I didn't read it. But didn't you post this before?"Do you not realise how f**king stupid that sounds? Why would you do that?
Dan6061
You'd be better off asking your 'newbie' questions here anyway, seeing as most of the full members have a lot of experience, and we all seem to know what we're on about! More than some of the new members that have been riding for a few weeks or so...
Matt Vandart
And so are you.Get a grip boy.The guy that posted the bollox about brown nosing was full of it. Why post something so negative, if he knew it was full of brown nosing and cliches why bother reading it and further to that knocking someones confidence to ask questions on this forum by posting smarmy nonsense knocking the guy for having a go. As it goes I think the original post is a bit long winded, cliched and brownosing but that is the guys writing style, I didn't feel compelled to slag him for it.However I did feel compelled to slag the other guy because his comment was just in no way constructive at all and being the first response to the original post may have really put the guy off trying to get advice or using the forum at all. I'll take back the wanker bit though, I have to admit it was a bit much.Matt Edited February 7, 2009 by Themechanicalbear

Pashley26
Fair enough.MattDon't get worked up dude. This forum is full of pricks, just take things with a pinch of salt and be the middle aged man you are Try posting in Chit Chat more, Random Small Questions and posting in the Angry thread your questions, but in a "not knowing this makes me angry" sort of way and people will give you a good response, and fair enough they'll be a few piss takers. But remember, these piss takers are in the 10/15 age range and know f**k all about anything except trials. You should have got onto this forum 3/4 years ago, word has it that it was the bollocks back then ! Phil H
I suppose the point I'm trying to make is,Isn't this a forum?Yes it is, it's implicit in the name! Anyhow not to be satirical or sarcastic it was a warming testament. What I guess I find most interesting is the way in which people react to it, and infact I think this spans the whole of the forum (and applies directly to answering the point of your thread). I find it interesting to see how sometime the use of sarcasm and taking the mick is wholly acceptable, whilst other times it is viewed as completely out of order (which isn't always directly as a result of the content of the thread). Anyway to pass judgement, where I shouldn't, but whilst I'm here: I found it to be pretty painful to read and meaningless. Of course at this point the consensus is it was a geuine and heart warming piece of writing and we appreciate that because we are 'safe', however just as easily the whole forum could have mocked it. This brings me onto another point: I don't understand the awe of being a 'full member' people discuss it as if it is an honour, a true calling in life. Just a couple of my thoughts back form when I used to use the forum reguarly, which I think apply here. (no offence intended) Phil
