After a LOT of trial and error and a hell of a lot of fiddling, I am finally happy with my rear maggie.

I have maggie lever and cylinders, 4 finger blade, magura braided hosing and TNN cnc pads plus a Trialtech carbon booster.

I use standard maggie clamps, but I have filed them down so they fit as close to the frame as possible, I also run my booster with no spacers. I have also but an elastic band around my lever blade and bar to make it slightly easier to pull (to reduce arm pump).

My brake acts like a vee, not great bite, but really good hold! I would like more bite, but holding power is more important, plus the brake is quieter which I like.

I am running a front hope trials disk on the front a the mo with a 200mm rotor, the power is good but I have been playing with a front vee and I rather liked that. I just need some Trialtech vee forks now :)

vee forks

damn forgot that, i'll have to change my forks to run my XTR, bought new disc ones (and 4 bolt (wooo :( ))

pooey thats annoying, i love the geo of my echo forks but adapters and Vee's i have had bad experiences with! grr

another thing i'm not a fan of is the wheel flex on my stock when i run disc. mayb its just because my build is whack :P

or front maggy? anyone liking front magura's? I would prefer to run it on the 4 bolts without a booster for better hold, but will it crack the forks? (i like front wheel moves)

cheers

Have you had any problems with your hope?

Rear: Raceline maggie, 1 koxx brown, 1 citrus.

Front: Shimano disk brake (SHIZZLE)

1 brown, 1 plaz

1 deore disk brake (160) that works fine if you put new pads in it!

and for me:

Maggie 04, rb lever blade, echo cnc clamps, braided crossover, rb 2 bolt booster, zenith frame

Avid bb7 203mm, standard pads, sd7 lever , xt cable

Interesting topic, Matt. I've just bought my first Trials bike, without brakes, and my only way of stopping so far is when one of my dogs

falls under the front wheel. I'm sure a brake might be quieter.

Like yourself, I'd like to hear the reasons behind peoples brake choices. I think i'm starting to learn the physics of the differerent models and types,

but wonder about reliability also? The amount of help asked for on TF for brake problems is staggering.(especially Maguras?)

Is this down to 2nd hand brake purchases,

or is it due to poor maintenance/the Trials abuse they receive in general?

I suppose different choices/combinations may be influenced by riding style/technique? (and obviously cashflow!) Am I getting warm?

Therefore, any members advice on brake choice would be gratefully pondered!

Or, as we would say in Wales, " Which brakes are the best?". Or as my dogs might say, " Buy some f****** brakes!!!"

in responce the the lack of dual disk riders. it's down to choice alot of the time, the very popular frames echo controls for instance don't have the mounts, and unless you run pro2s which have disk tabs as standard, you need specific hubs which cost more, so you're unlikely to spend an extra 10-15quid on the whim that you might go for a dual disc. i already had a pro2, then simtras were on offer otherwise i don't think i'd have bothered. rear disc is made of win though.

middle aged man, your best buying brand new brakes, just for the sake of confidence. a standard HS33 with some good pads (koxx pads, or ideally coust-sinks are what i always ran) on the rear, and a bb7 on the front if you can run a disk, otherwise another magura will be fine.

Cheers Ogre! I've just bought a 2nd hand Onza Zoot without brakes, so can run a front disk. I've got a £100 -ish to

splash, but keeping an open mind. The front disk, rear Magura does seem a popular choice, can anyone convince me why?

Or has anyone a better option? All advice welcome please.

Matt, sorry if I'm treading all over your topic, but rather than start a new brakes one ........ ;)

I just jam my foot in between the fork and tire to stop. Frame and tire on rear. Makes it interesting. ;)

On the mod, vee front and rear no booster. Moe greens. SD7 arms. FR5 levers. No juice, just cables. Light grind.

Building the stock the same way except it will have a rear booster.

front disk offers proportional stopping as well as being to completely lock the wheel, with a rear brake, you want it to work like an on-off set up, if your going around town and you need to slow down your rear brake will be useless cause it'll waste your pad or tyres. rear disc is less popular cause people recon you can hit it + loose a days riding through a wonky rotor, but it's really unlikely + discs can take quite abit of abuse. plus most frames only offer rear maggy tabs. also trials puts forwards/backwards force on a wheel and discs are usually only good at slowing/stoping the forward direction. i can go on, but i think it's realy down to pimpness + being able to have a more practical brake when your commuting.

£100 for brakes, probably stops you buying new unless you wanted to run vee brakes? levers £18 calipers £40 Vee daptors £40 plus brake cables, you could just do it for £100 :P

Erm... yeah, my mistake. I'd only had a random look at Tarty's and saw Maggy £60 ish, Avid BB7 £40 +. I forgot about a lever and cable etc. >_<

Am I near in saying; (new prices)

-Front/rear Magura's £120 ish (more if boosters are needed?)

-Rear Magura £60 ish (+ booster?) / front Avid BB7 £50 ish, + lever (SD 7?) £10, + cable (?) = £130 + ?

-Front/rear V-brakes (Avid SD7 calipers, levers, adaptors, cable) = £120 ish?

Am I missing anything from these three choices? I could go mad and get Hope/Avid ultimate but then the brakes would be worth more than the bike!

(Onza Zoot) I think £150 is a more realistic figure, what would you good people do in my situation? I can upgrade other parts as I progress,

so I would like to buy good quality brakes as a base. I've tried searching, but it'll take forever so thought I'd just ask. Your opinions and reasons why,

will be appreciated! :)
