Alex Dark
Can anyone give me any tips on how to tap my rear maggie mount to a lager bolt as it has striped down?Iv checked Wicki and there is nothing about it on there. Thanks allot.Leo.if the threads are completely gone, then it should be as simple as just running an m5 tap into them
austen
What i did when i tapped my hope brake leaver was :1. Drill out old threads so its smooth ( make sure you drill straight with the appropriate size drill bit)2. Find the size of tap you need e.g m5,m6. 3. Then put some cutting compound on the tip of the tap ( This is a green substance, acts like a lubricant. You don't really need it.)4. Start to thread the tap in.5. Once its gripped do a half turn forward, quarter turn back (Quarter turn back ensures bits of spre metal thats been cut out is taken away)6. Keep doing the above step untill required depth is reached. That should keep you right
Rob Leech
Easy as pie to do pal.Drill your existing threads out to 5mm.Buy your self a set of M6 taps (a set contains 3 taps) and a tap wrenchTap away!!! lol The taps go through an order, if you look at the top of the tap, there's a recessed area. the larger the area, the sooner you use it, if you understand me, lol.Insert the first tap into the hole, with the tap in the wrench, apply light downward pressure and turn 1 full rotation in a clockwise direction, then back half a rotation anticlockwise.Continue until the whole of the hole has been tapped, repeat with 2nd and 3rd tap.if your tap starts to get really stiff when your turning it through the full clockwise rotation, ease off, as you may snap the tap, and they are a pain in the arse to remove .Just remember to keep your tap level whilst your doing it, or you'll end up with bolts on the piss .Cheers, Josh. Matt Vandart
Is it on an aluminum frame? If it is all you need do is get a 6m cap head bolt (one with an alen key head) grind a groove down each side of the thread as shown in the technical drawing below with a dremmel or a triangle shaped fileRam that in, as described for the tapping procedure and viola fixed thread without buying a new tap.MattDon't use the ground bolt to fix your brake on. Rob Leech
Ha ha ha, i luv that drawing.easy way to put that slot in-Put the bolt in a vice, showing just over half the thread above the top of the vice.get a grinder with a thin cutting disc in.run the disk along the bolt, using the vice as your guide repeat for the other side, ensureing the opposite slot is level with the vice(Y)Do like that idea though, lol, much cheaper than buying a set .Cheers, Josh. Al_Fel
Click here to learn a lesson.I'm sure there is a better guide out there somewhere that isn't american but I can't be arsed looking this was the first one I found.Edit: I've just watched the whole thing and its not exactly the same as helicoiling a brake mount but its pretty close to what you need to do. Some of the tools are slightly different and I wouldn't run the tap in the way he did it you need to take more care and back it off every half turn or so.
