Smoâ„¢
It's snowing heavily on the Island at the moment - I left work early to drive the Rex home while the sun was out (for all of about 3 minutes) and I'm seriously glad I did. There will be a lot of accidents today. The drive home was nothing short of f*cking scary.
BenLeacockâ„¢
all snows gone here, rained and melted. Gutted... Suppose this is the 4th time we had snow this year!
Tomm
I had a nightmare drive yesterday morning. Some of the roads round my house are pretty busy but hadn't been gritted. It seems that if loads of cars drive on un-gritted snow, it turns to ice. So I had to drive around 2 miles on sheet ice which was horrible. I was going at 5mph (no joke, I was looking at the speedo) and started to slide off the camber of the road into a parked car. It was like that scene with the bulldozer in Austin Powers - it was happening so slowly but I could really do much at all. I ended up missing the car by a couple of inches. Scary stuff.Yesterday afternoon I drove out into the Peaks and went snowboarding, then rode my XC bike in the snow in the dark. On the tops of the hills there was loads - we were jumping off stuff into waist-deep snow and making snow holes to hide in
Jaffacakes
I would have hated to be driving yesterday.Last night round about 1, where all the cars tyres had been was just a sheet of black ice. We were sliding 20+ metres down the road...Its just started sleeting now, but theres still snow on the ground.
Tomm
Ha yeah, the other thing that was kind of amusing - I went to park on a steep hill next to my friend's house and (VERY slowly) reversed parked into quite a small space. Handbrake on, engine off, sliding backwards because the back two wheels didn't have enough grip to hold the car! Ended up leaving it in gear, and thankfully by the time I had to leave the snow had melted a bit so I (just) had enough grip to get out. Ash-Kennard
leaving my parking space in winch, i managed to wheelspin on the spot to 55mph no handbrake. got to 4th gear then got scared of making my engine go bangthis was yesterday btw Edited February 3, 2009 by Ash-Kennard

Ali C
had blizzard conditions here last night! So Iolo and myself thought it was the perfect time to go on an expedition to Stoodley pike (pike). I don't think jeans and trainers were meant for crawling through 4ft drifts and bogs, but we made it up. It was soooo windy!, you had to look at the floor because the snow would hurt your face otherwise. We got back at 11pm.

Jason222
I find it funny how big of a deal you brits make out of a dusting of snow And car accidents! LOL!We're getting 6 inches tonight. We've got about 20-24 inches on the ground already...this winter hasn't been too bad. Last year there were times when we had over 40 inches built up.My english professor was talking to our class today about how people in oxford were having a terrible time with the snow. A student said "They make a big deal over an inch of snow, while we have snow difts the size of houses" LOL

Max Quinn
I think every day where there is more than an inch and a half of snow should be made into a national holiday. Who gives a shit that our economy's been unproductive over the past couple of days and all that crap, it wasn't exactly booming when it wasn't snowing anyways Everyone should just enjoy it for once. Tomm
I find it funny how big of a deal you brits make out of a dusting of snow And car accidents! LOL!I was thinking about this the other day. It seems stupid at first but when you think about, it makes sense. We have some gritter trucks but they only ever get used for a couple of days a year (sometimes not at all?), so it doesn't make sense to invest in loads and loads of trucks. When it snows properly (about once every 10 years, if that), there aren't enough gritter trucks, or the staff to drive them. Plus because they don't grit every day (like they must do in Canada), the gritter workers probably aren't used to it and therefore it takes them longer to do the roads. Meaning half the roads don't get gritted, but they're still fairly busy with drivers, so we end up with icy roads. British drivers rarely have to drive on ice, so they don't know about how to control a car when it slides. Therefore everyone is really cautious and slow, except for wreckless people who are the ones crashing. Most people here drive to work. If they can't make it by car for the reasons above, there aren't too many alternatives. Then add in the novelty factor, and you can see why people would rather stay at home and build snowmen Apparently it's not just Britain that has this problem - parts of France/Germany have the same level of bunking off when it snows.
