ok because im an idiot i threaded one of my maggy threads........ again :( was thinking about putting a steel insert in, like i did with my ninja but the downfall was during the summer the frame expanded so the inserts popped out, a bit ghey in my eyes. so i was telling my step dad about it and he said get a tap and die set, had a old screw fix laying around and luckily they do a kinda starter pack medium pack and professional pack, it says it cuts and cleans it question is. is this better than heilicoiling it or am i just an idiot and its the same thing but its just got 2 names for it

please help cheers rick

A helicoil's supposed to be stronger.

You'll need to drill out anything else that the bolt will go through, so like your clamps and booster. Why? Well, you have to tap it to a bigger bolt size.

I'd just stick another helicoil in there.

Lol

They're different things.

with helicoiling you re-tap an m5.25 thread into your frame, then screw what is essentially a steel spring in; this replaces the m4 thread that used to be there. This will NOT come out if its heated if fitted properly.

The cut and clean thing is properly just a tap used for cleaning threads, if the threads have gone, then the materials probably gone from inside the mount, hence leaving not much to tap into

A helicoils' most likely your best option in my opinion, will cost you around a fiver per thread at most garages.

I tapped one of my mounts out to a M6 and am using a trialtech M6 ti stem bolt instead of a maggy bolt and its holding perfect (Y)

Makes it such a pain in the ass if you wanna sell your frame though, dont you have to file out your maggie mounts and booster holes too? Seems like you're shooting yourself in the foot when you could have just helicoiled it.

local ghey trading estate engineers was riding all round mine yest to and from 3 shops (the enginner who could do it) (a shop that sells nuts bolts and fixings) and another shop that can sell the tools, between them they did not have the right sized tap, got 2 heilicoils for 25p bargain but no one had a tap that fitted the heilicoil. and the day started off so well with my first fry up that i cooked with everything.

was thinking about buying this as well, is it worth it?

there are 2 other kits but the cheap one has a bad review (apparently the taps dont sit right in the wrench) and to be honest im not gonna spend 50 odd quid on a set that i only need one or two bits out of it
