bikeperson45
Just wondering as it seems trials is hard on the body (knees, wrists) and whether people do stuff to prevent this affecting them when your older.I know Ryan Leech does "power" yoga. Or will doing it just strenght joints?thanks
r2wtrials
i may feel it a bit more owing to my slightly advanced years..! But the wrists and knees are the main stress points for me. Make sure the bike is set up well so thet on a normal stance there is no stress on the wrists and arms when holding onto the bars and using the brakes. I ride motorcycle trials so just seem to get by with riding time rather than any sort of fitness regime.... even so i have had time out in the last 6 months because of a bad wrist and also my back is knackered!!Sounds poncy but stretch before you ride.. warm up and stretch the muscles before you do damage. Revolver
If you learn to be a smoother rider, you should take less damage to your body. In parkour, part of it is efficiency of direction you're going in, but the other is minimising the effect of such big falls on your body. They do this by rolling after large drops, and a similar principle can be applied to trials! Easier said than done though, eh?
Muel
I've been riding motorbike trials for nearly 5 years, and push bike trials for about 2 and a half, but I've been dirt jumping and bmxing for years before that.My ankles and wrists are really stiff and sore sometimes, my wrists are worse, if I rotate them in circles then they click and crunch every time, it's not nice. They're not painful or anything, just uncomfertable, but my ankles have actually got better since I started push bike trials, when i used t do a lot of dirt jumping and XC they were really bad. bikeperson45
Thanks for replys. Hopefully the fun out weighs the pain.I haven't had a many injurys, a couple of scars(but U had enough of them before I started trials) but my knee aches a little if I ride for a couple of hours. thanks
Matt Vandart
I have several titanium pins in my body. 5 in my shoulder 2 in my left knee, 1 in my right ankle, one the length of my left femur, a semi rebuilt hip, a few random screws here and there............ I like lankyri do kickboxing warm ups and look like a right mong for 30 mins, but have no problems with my knees or wrists. I have been riding BMX, freeeride and XC for most of my life (at least 24 years) and have been told once I would never walk properly again.I think it is plain stubbornness that keeps me going and the ability to switch off pain which I learned after smashing myself up on a motorbike and was proper messed for about a year, or maybe it's because I am mostly made of metal Build the muscles up around the affected areas and the joints will keep more stable and less prone to injury.Taking into consideration your age if it is really bothering you I would go and see a doctor before it causes you real problems later in life, believe me arthritis is not fun. Jamie_Neal
Hopefully the fun out weighs the pain.Usually but a week of not riding also helps occasionally, also gives more of an urge to ride as well not to mention the recovery.I found that warming up helps loads as does warming down - doesn't need to be much.Rides usually start with small stuff anyway which gives you time to warm up, I don't know may people who ride their best when they first get out. Stretching my calves and legs helps my lower back loads otherwise I'm useless and really stiff.

psycholist
As far as I can find out your joints popping (2 versions - the repeatable popping like wrists is tendons/ligaments moving over the surface of the joint, one off joint popping where it takes time before that joint can pop again is due to dissolved gas coming out of the lubricating fluid in joints - it has to dissolve back in before it can pop again) has no link to arthritis, so it's not a harbringer of doom. If you keep hurting a particular muscle or joint find exercises designed to specifically work that muscle/joint and do them - the body will do its damnedest to fix itself when you're dealing with aches and pains and building the muscles around a joint will often sort the pain out. Sore backs are likely to be a symptom of something wrong with either your posture while on your bike or the bike geometry itself. Exercises specifically to strengthen your back as well as being more conscious of your posture can make a huge difference to this (I ruptured a disk in my back around 1996/1997 and have had no trouble at all from it in years with no intervention bar giving it some rest and doing a bit of swimming/stretching exercises to rehabilitate it).I'm pretty sure compared to most mainstream sports, trials is very safe in terms of regularity of injuries and their severity - the dangerous part of trials is the freak accident side of things where the consequences of a chain snapping or something like that can lead to very nasty falls, but that isn't common. I think basketball is the most dangerous sport from an injury per hours played point of view. Sports like golf, fishing and lawn bowls are the sports with the highest fatality rates (Usually through heart attacks) though ...
tris
I think it's from Trials and BMX and motocross but my wrists are well and truely fuked. If i put weight on my hands at 90 degrees (Doing a handstand or press-ups) it canes like a bitch and my wrists feel awefull for hours. I think this is a lasting effect from several harsh landings. I can't think what else could have caused it.Now i do daily pressups on my fists so it doesnt strain my wrists. The strange thing is i never feel pain in my wrists whilst riding

Damon W
good topic this actually! How i see it isIf there are some minor affects like clicking of joints, shin bumpsss ect ect atleast when youre older you can tell youre grankids what you used to do, and show them the videos of youreself Also depends on youre outlook on life, personaly i live for now, i may not be around in 30 years time, hell, i may not be around tomorow, so you may aswell enjoy youreself whilst you can aye and not think about 'preserving' youreself, least thats how i see it anywayAND!Im pretty sure if you wen to the gym this wouldnt happen? youre joints and muscles will adapt to massive loads on them, wich should stop it?codliver oil anyone? Dan6061
if I rotate them in circles then they click and crunch every time, it's not nice. I have that with my wrists! Doesn't bother me at all though...Sometimes my fingers will just 'lock up' They really hurt and I can't straighten them without using my other hand to straighten them... Anyone else get that? It rarely happens, doesn't really hurt, just bloody annoying!I don't really get achey etc after riding though, although I usually just play about doing small tech stuff, so I'm not throwing myself at big walls etc... Tom Booth
I would say riding destroyed my back, but it's more then likely the savage stiff ride in the mini and the bucket seats....

Anyone else get that? It rarely happens, doesn't really hurt, just bloody annoying!I used to get that when I was riding bmx all the time, its a form of tendonitis and nothing you can really do apart from rest them. I did find that having my brake lever bite point closer to the bars helped, also having a slightly spongey brake (rather than one that is solid at the lever).Im now 29 and have been riding bikes in a silly manner (bmx/jump/trials) since I was 16, Im certainly stiffer now and recover much slower but as dwats said, once the body has acclimatised to the work then its normally ok My endurance has reduced drastically though, now I can manage maybe 4 hours of solid riding before having to stop, used to be able to do 12 hours solid at a skatepark Edited January 29, 2009 by forteh
