JD™
Appologies for the slight bump on this topic, but I've recently gotten the dreaded Ring of death. Phoned up Microsoft, only to be told that its not under warrenty as I bought it pre-owned from a shop, and that it would be an £80 fee + postage, with a 12 week minimum wait to be looked at, then a 3-4 week repair time, so I hung up. I had a trawl round the web and found some online tutorials so I've stripped it down ect, however I need some "Thermal paste". I've found some online retailers that sell it, but I'd like to get it repaired fairly quickly and dont see the point in £5 postage for a small tube of paste, so does anyone know of any physical shops where I can find it on the shelves?I thought maybe PC World would sell it, as its surely a common pc/heatsink tool for pc building. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and any success stories on people who have done DIY repairs. Thanks, AndyYou should find thermal paste in any good PC shops yes. Look out for Arctic Silver as it's the best stuff out there. I have done the x-clamp and penny fix on my xbox and it got rid of the RROD for a while, but it turns out some other bits were wrong with mine so it's dead again now. As long as you're really careful not to scratch anything and there's nothing wrong with your mobo then you'll be fine I'm sure. Also make sure to clean the chips to an absolute mirror shine for the best results.Good luck.
ZHI-sam
sorry seem to have missed your post ive sent over 30 consoles to MS that uve brought off ebay, and then resold them on a forum im on. they normaly canrt tell if you do it right, ringing them isnt the best wayhave you tried registering it on xbox.co.uk? if it lets yo then you can send it off as you will then be the registered owner of it. if its aready registered then find the error code for it and ill tell you how to fix itThe specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error codeTurn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button. The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below). Release the eject button and press it again. The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code. Release the eject button and press it again. The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code. Release the eject button and press it again. The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code. Release the eject button and press it again. The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights. You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash. Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:All four lights flashing - 0 One light flashing - 1 Two Lights flashing - 2 Three lights flashing -
that NBR dude
You actually thought Microsoft would repair your console for free when you bought it second hand?! Don't want to sound like a dick but that's dumb/ lesson learntI bought the console from a shop, but was told it was pre-owened (demo model ect) but still carried the same garantees. Something that is a known problem by Microsoft, and a common fault in the console identified my Microsoft themselves, is not my problem, and is Microsofts problem. If I had misused the product then I would agree and never expect it to be repaired. A Manufacturing defect on the other hand, is something as a consumer, I'd expect to be rectified.Anyway thanks for the constructive help, I'm going to take a trip to PC World tonight to see if I can find something that will work. sobek
Yeh the rings of death...would have though that microsoft would have solved the problem, yet it still happens.mine died last summer...after a year. but because it was modified/chipped, the warrenty was void so i had to dish out 3000 yuan (almost a month of work here) for a new one.Think if it happens again...will either try to get it repaired or get a ps3

Sam Ward
does the xclamp kit stop it from RRODing?
ZHI-sam
rrod is caused by the chips getting too hot, mainly from their very poor aplication of thermal paste. microsoft have now put in smaller chips, meaning less heat and new heatsinks. still wont fix it though as its down to how they paste it up and the way they hold the heatsinks on.as for the bolt and washer xclamp fix, it will fix 90% of rrod's. make sure you use as5 (arctic silver 5) and that the chips are mirror shineyanyone needs help let me know, ive done loads of rrod repairs for my site

that NBR dude
all my mates have bought there xbox's second hand and they all got repaired for free when they got ring of death!Maybe they've recently changed their policy then. They told me it would be 12 weeks before they can even look at it, so maybe they've had an influx of them recently.

that NBR dude
Just done the fix this morning, and everything is now perfectly working. Cost me £5.08 to repair, and did it in a couple of hours. So much easier and better than paying Microsoft £100+

TheCircus
What do I do if my xbox has no red rings but wont display any picture (but still plays sounds). Double checked the cable (all in correct sockets), checked the tv (works fine on all other channels), tried a VGA cable to television (stll no dice). I assume it's the dreaded no xbox picture fail. I punched in my serial number into the microsoft website and it says that it's oout of warranty even though I bought it new about 1.5 years ago, I don't have the receipt obviously, WAT DO I DO?
