Lar
This has probably been discussed before, but it's something i've been thinking about recently, so would be good to hear advice about etc.I can sidehop best in the direction of my front foot (I ride left foot forward, i sidehop to the left). It feels way more natural and i can go higher that way. Sidehopping to backwheel this way feels a bit odd though, cos you don't naturally twist towards the wall (if you get me?), and most people who are good seem to sidehop away from their lead foot.I'm basically asking, is it worth me going back to a tardish level of sidehopping and learning to sidehop going away from my drive foot? Is it gonna make other moves easier etc? Or should i just go with what feels natural?Advice, opinions, abuse all welcome, cheers and that. Mikee
Go with what feels natural. I'm pretty sure Neil Tunnicliffe rides left foot forwards and hops to the left and he can sidehop quite high! I also ride left foot forward and hop to the left and I don't get problems with it. But I suggest learning to sidehop to the right aswell as the left because it could be really usful in competition and just general riding
bikeperson45
Most find it easier to sidehop direction of back foot as they can "hug" to the wall more, although at first it is more natural forward foot.Best to learn either way though
psycholist
Keep trying sidehops both ways - it gives you more options. I find sidehopping to my front foot still feels more natural, but it seems easier to get to the back wheel hopping towards my back foot. It also seems easier to land front wheel first and pivot the back wheel up when I hop towards the back foot, which does allow for higher hops. Well, i did learn the sidehops oposite foot closer to a wall. I can sidehop higher this way, but the only problem is that I sort of do it to my front wheel and pulling back after. With left foot (front foot) closer, with lower sidehops i tend to land on both, why? dont even know. Also i can only sidehop to back wheel with left foot to a wall. shamus
go back to special level! it'll make me feel better!no other form of advice apart from the stuff we regularly discuss on rides
Dan6061
I'm the same, left foot, sidehop to the left.I'd start sidehopping the other way though, before you progress loads doing it the other way! Reason being, the way we sidehop now, our right foot restricts us from being able to tuck as much on bigger sidehops, not trying to be TGS, but you do need to tuck sometimes!I can't sidehop to the right to save my life! Been sidehopping to the left for so long, and did start to get a pretty good height at one point! So I can't be doing with learning them again! Henrik Y
I ride right foot forward. The first few month riding with my Onza T-bird I sidhoped to the right. But when I got a 26" I started to jump on the left side. I jump almost 110cm to the left side and about half of that to the right. But I've never practised on the right side so I don't think it's very difficult to learn it but you'll have to take your time doing it. Mostly when I ride I do the fun things, not what I need to practise at. But riding is for fun and not a must but with a little extra work on that and you'll get more options later and that will make it more fun.A friend of mine rides left foot forward but jumps to the left like me and he jumps around +120cm I think. He thinks the right side feels a little weird but jumps about 100cm on that side too.So the best would be if you learn both sides.
Luke Rainbird
Look at that homo Johns. It wasn't until recently he started sidehopping the 'right' way and he's got them both ways to a decent height.Pays to learn things both ways though fo' sho'
Lar
Cheers for all the comments guys. It basically seems sidehopping the way i do isn't a disaster, might lose a bit from not being able to tuck quite as much. Gonna work on both sides though, cos being able to go big both ways is gonna be damn useful. Good to know tunnicliffe does it that way though, pretty sure if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me, i'm more about having a laugh than concentrating on one move, but good to know i ain't wasting my time like.Cheers,Lar
Cresswell_d
I'm a right footer and I like to do side hops to my right (about 40 inch). But I have learned on how to do the opersite side (about 33 inch). And the thing is it doest feel as good.So at the end of the day its up to you what way you do it, If you are entering competions then I would learn the other way just incase!!Daz. James Shields
i ride left foot forewards, and for liek first day i tried sidehops, or first couple of them anyway, i went to left. i tried to the right and progressed alot quicker. It's all been said, comes down to how you feel comfortable, for comps its handy to sidehop both ways, but just do as you feel.james. But I have learned on how to do the opersite side (about 33 inch). And the thing is it doest feel as good.I am about exactly the same! I've tryed and tryed going left, even banned myself going right but i just couldn't get the hang of it at all. I think its because I spin to my right it just feels more natural to approach a wall from that side? I haven't done too badly doing it the wrong way.
