Imagine, hypothetically, I had £1200 to £1500 spend.

After a great deal of contemplation, I thought a 24" would suit my needs.

I saw a possible, ultimate 'Inspired' on Tarty, then, after calming myself down,

I realised for that sort of cash, I could buy a 20" Onza and a 24" Dirt/Jump bike

as well! ( I live on the coast, with skate parks, miles of promenade, rocks and dunes to die for!).

I always buy second hand, the thing is, is that say you brought that inspired for £1400 as soon as you step on the thing its worth about.. nothing... well you would recover about £500-£600 on it when it comes to the point of selling it which is pennys, also seeing as its new you will be heartbroken when you break bits and scratch your bike, I personally would buy a second hand Inspired (which there is in the f/s section) which has been loved and looked after for about the 1/3 of a price of a new one. It may be tatty and not exactly what you want but when it comes to re-sale the maximum you stand to lose is about £100 which is nothing compared to a spare one.

I wouldn't advise buying an Onza new to be honest, if your planning to get to a decent level of riding then you will need to replace almost all the parts on it and spend a fortune running it. Really the 2nd hand market for trials is so good I've never brought anything new! you need to make your decision on what bike you want, I say you can spend 600 on a next to new Inspired on here and use it as a muli-purpose bike they are just so versatle in what you can do! Probably not the best for dirt jumping but in your descripion of what you want you don't say that "There are dirt jumps that I look at everyday and fantasise about" so i would just leave dirt jumping out of it.

And hey even if you want a DJ you can get a decent one from the change of your budget if you get an inpired second hand. I think you need to clear up your confusion of what bike you want by getting out there and asking to have a go on people bikes! Its the only way your really going to find out what suits you. What type of riding history do you have?

EDIT I did a bit of searching and found this. http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/forum/index....howtopic=130559 – quality spec and Anal really know’s about bikes and I’m sure hes been a good owner, this new would cost about £1600ish new, I mean the 2 hubs alone are worth over £450 so for £650 it really is a steal. And it would be perfect for a trials / street / park bike comprimise! My friend Joe (Maher) could still sidehop his Inspired about 40" better than i could on my mod so its really not to be sniffed at as a perfect all rounder

EDIT EDIT: To make it more "parky" you would only need to buy a shorter stem which would transform the whole feel of the bike, so you could literally just swap stems compared to how you fancyed riding on that day? I wouldn't but its an option which would save you a tonne of money

Remember a TGS bike can still go to the skatepark, it's down to the rider.

So it would depend on what your riding ability really is like. I'd avoid 24" personnally, less parts available means more hassle.

Second hand can be good. I think because people sell crap it brings down the price of the good stuff. Aim for sellers aged 18 and above. Also local meet up is best so you can check the stuff out.

And as for the avatars changing, look at their names! :P

What would you do?, (or anyone else?) in my position?

Follow the link in Simpson's post, Alan's Inspired is worth every penny of 8-900 pounds in my mind, so it's a steal at 650 - if i hadn't just built my leeson i'd have snapped that up!!!!

It's well worth looking second hand, gems such as that will pop up every now and again - if you'd seriously want a 24@, that would be perfect.

As for the avatar thing, i'll jump off the band wagon. Just for you ;)

Once again guys, thanks for the advice.

As i'm just on the good side of 40, i'm never going to be a 'Trials World Champion'! :(

I used to BMX, road race, time trials, cyclo cross, track race and mountain bike - but not for many, many years!

I'm just after a hobby/interest I could use to get fit and also something to share with my

11 year old son as he gets older.

The 2 bike idea, Trials and Dirt/Jump, was because of our coastal location, with parks, prom, dunes and local hills and woods,

there's miles and miles of spots suitable to both sports.

The second hand bike purchase is worth some serious thought, thanks.

(lovely Inspired by the way, I just haven't the readies yet!)

If I seem a bit indecisive, it's the reason I joined the forum.

As a 4 week old Newbie, all your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks. :)

umm...eh???

sorry if i've offended someone.....umm?...what? etc.

Just ignore the unconstructive posts you get a lot of people who seek to make an issue out of every point, (its a pubery issue as I'm sure you will find out with you son in a few years! And people can be little gob-shites behind the screen and theres no real concequences)

But just look at it like buying a car, i doubt you would walk into a show room and buy a brand new one, but instead keep an eye on the second hand market for a well looked after bike which fits your needs, especially if your doing it as a little bit on the side to bond with you son, I think something like Anal's inspired is perfect, but more bikes like it will come arround if you miss the one you want so no real hurry, just check up daily on the f/s wanted threads here, things which are well looked after and slightly higher priced because of it usually kick arround for ages before being sold so don't rush into it. Also avoid buying individual components, because it will cost a fortune in the long run.
