The Learner Driver Thread

I was just looking though the "post a picture of your car thread" topic and began to wonder if any other members are learning to drive at the moment? How are you all getting on? To answer my own question I failed three tests! Got my next test on the 2nd of february. :-

All the best people pass third time, then second and then second :P

Altho it is much more a matter of attitude, the biggest wanker in the world could pass first and be a total fanny on the road.

I have a good attitude towards driving just have nerves of jelly! :$

Nowt to be ashamed of. Its a skill that everyone picks up differently. Also, every examiner is human and if he has had a rough day and decides he doesnt like your haircut then you wouldnt get a pass even if you paid him. I had the same examiner both times on my artic test. I had made a total hash of getting round the yard on the first attempt, but he liked the way i drove so made sure that he would be my examiner the second time, i gave a good account of myself and passed. I'm sure that having the right approach and attitude to the test got me my licence.

Don't let anyone, particularly cocky sixth formers, drag you into a discussion of how many minors they got on their test. It means nothing at all. What means more is when you can take your granny to the shops and she passes no comment whatsoever on your driving, then you know you've got it cracked.

I strongly disagree that 'first time passers' having better driving skills than 3rd, 4th or even 8th time passers. All the driving test proves is that you are confident and safe on the road - but I don't see just that as good driving, afterall they only teach you to pass the test, not to drive.

I do see good driving skills as being able to predict what other drivers are going to do (i.e. how many times have you come to a junction and made eye contact with someone about to pull out - you get that strange feeling that they're going to pull out on you, and then they do and you're prepared for it), being able to judge the road and conditions and someone who is able to make the ride comfortable (I have friends who only change gears when they're abut to redline it and its far from comfortable) and most of all having respect for other road users (i.e not driving up peoples arses and over/undertaking on stupid places).

Unfortunately it seems that people are passing their test these days and they then think they own the road; which pisses me off for two reasons, 1. I'm a driver and 2. it just re-enforces the stereotype of younger drivers which is why my insurance costs me a fortune.

I've finally decided to learn to drive.

Have had a full motorbike licence for about 8 years now but never bothered with a car.

I'm not fussed about driving really but I need to get a van to haul the gasgas to events at the weekends.

Passed my theory on Friday & I reckon a few more lessons & i'll be ok to put in for the real test.

It'll be nice to get it out of the way.

Negative, all it proves is that you can read books, and do good in tests. The driving test is largely a joke, you learn to pass your test, that is it. General road users regard the roads, their laws, and their general surroundings vastly different to learners. I genuinely think push-pull is dangerous, and that the test should encompass 100x more things. Motorway driving and country lane at night being some major omissions.

People need to learn to read the road and not the text book in which the rules for that road are printed on.

I've been driving 3 years at the end of this month, i've been thrown the book, i've had very near misses, and i'm still a largely inexperienced driver.

Best of luck, theory i passed 2nd time and the practical i passed 3rd time. :)

I agree, I think the test i BS all it requires you to be able to do, is memorise a few procedures (i.e Mirror, signal, manouver) and put them into practice. Its simply teaching you to pass the test, not to drive. Like I said before I have been driving for a month and a bit, which really is nothing. I have already in that time had a fe near misses (not all my fault) the most recent, and probably worst of all being coming down a road near tesco (straight road, so visibility is good, taxi driver (possibly the worst drivers of all in my experience, even worse than women :P) just pulled out, from my left, so i had right of way, he pulled out, when i was litterally just coming onto the roundabout, it being only a mini roundabout that was f**king close, it was also wet, and could have easily been icey given the conditions, had to swerve the the other side of the raod and brake pretty hard/dangerously given the conditions. It was pretty scary, I find that with every thing like that which happens I learn somthing about driving, it seems a dangerous learning curve to me.

First time crew.

Ditto first time, passed with 7 lessons POW POW POW! (And motorbike first time. Still 0 points, after almost 2 years of driving :P) But that was largely due to just driving, as most of you prob know i can use my rents company cars without having to pay insurance so from my 17th birthday if my mum or dad wanted to go anywhere then i would be in the drivers seat waiting to go! Even though they still bitch about my ultra-slow driving for going too fast. My Dad was the best, he's done a lot of advanced driving course's due to time spent on the tracks with work, and stuff so he taught me loads of stuff that would never ever have got mentioned on lessons.

Just common sence things like learning when to pull in on the motorways, always giving yourself a get out, driving with space and expect others to make mistakes etc. and he really was the most helpfull person, also got hours and hours in the car without paying a fortune, I also think the main reason it helped was because I learnt how to drive without having to pay 100% attention, I don't know if that makes sence so ill explain - when your in a car with an instructor the only thing you focus on is driving and not making mistakes, I don't think you learn to drive well like that, with my dad we had the radio on and talking and just doing all the propper stuff subconciously made the test so much easier because i could just sit back, have a chat with the instructor and know I was doing everything propperly and not having to think about it.
