Revolver
HiThis isn't my trials bike, but my jump bike.Nevertheless:My hub, which is an atomlap trailpimp one, is starting to stick. By this I mean, when I stop pedalling, occasionally it will stop freewheeling. This is a particular nuisance because I have gears, and the chain goes slack and falls off the chainring (despite my chainguide) and its a twat to put it on.Why do you reckon it's doing it? It makes no different noises freewheeling, so I doubt any pawls or EPs are f**ked. Its not the bearings as it still rolls smooth.Really what I want to know is, if (and how do) I take off the freehub body, will it come away in lots of pieces?Ideally I want to fix it, I don't want to really have to buy a hub now, I can't afford it. Ben John-Hynes
It's probably a bit of dirt/crap/grime in your internals. Taking the freehub off; NO idea!
psycholist
If the freewheel catches suddenly while you're pedaling forwards but pedaling backwards doesn't consistently make the top run of chain slack, there's something stuck in the freewheel mechanism that catches intermittently. If while you backpedal the freehub lets the chain run slack every time, then the bearings might be draggy and need cleaning/replacement or else (Which I've only ever seen in a Hope XC hub) the spacer that separates the freehub bearings from the hub bearings on the axle might have got worn down allowing the freehub body to drag against the hub (This can be spotted by seeing if there's a difference between the drag on the freehub backpedaling while the wheel is in the frame with the QR closed and the drag with the wheel out of the frame. sstein
Take off the freehub body, check for any damage (replace anything broken). Remove the springs and pawls, clean and re-grease everything and then put it all back together. Will solve all of your problems.
Revolver
Take off the freehub bodyHow?
psycholist
Google and youtube both give me nothing - usually the freehub will pull off the side of the hub once you remove the drive side axle end cap. This may unscrew or just pull straight off the hub. I haven't worked on Atomlab hubs though, so no idea of the specifics...**edit: Should have said Atomlab - had Halo in my head for some reason ... Revolver
You worked on atomlab hubs?
sstein
Take off the freehub bodyHow?Remove the quick release skewer or axle bolts (or whatever else is being used) remove the the hub cap (the end of the axle that covers the bearings and normally has a serated washer on it) and then the freehub should just pull of with a little amount of force (don't be too harsh, if it doesnt budge it may have a locking system) If you still have problems take it into your lbs and ask their advice or just get them to do it.Just so you know I have not worked on atomlab rear hubs myself but all hubs are pretty much the same in the way that they are put together.
