Help! These Maggy Mounts Doesn't Seem Right!

Hi,

Just got my echo lite 07 frame this morning from selectbikes and I noticed something unusual. Look at the photos below, the maggy mounts doesn't seem to be flat and are leaning outwards like \ /. I can adjust the maggy cylinders so the pads are more like I I

Are they soppose to be like that? The maggy mounts on my GU TP was definitely not like this though. Thing is I only found this out when I fitted the top headset on so might be a problem if I do a return if it needs to!

Any help appreciated!

Echo are not the best for making well aligned frames - they do seem to be reliable though. I'd see about a return, mostly because this will annoy you every time you have to go at the brakes, make the frame harder to sell on after you're done with it and may make the brake more susceptible to slipping out when loaded backwards. I've owned 2 echo frames so far and neither of them had dropouts that were parallel to each other, but that's a lot easier to work around and I barely ever take my wheel off...

On the Echo Control I have, the brake mounts are angled correctly, but one mount is about a mm closer to the centre of the frame than the other - I was able to accommodate this easily with brake adjustment though, so not an issue for me.

Ah...shame...the frames being returned and refunded.

I would like to have a Echo Lite frame though, they were the first ever mods I've seen in my life years ago and got me into trials (but not until 3 months ago where I got my first mod).

But here are some pics of what she (yes it would have been a she...) roughly looks like after being built up, would have looked so nice...

Does all Lites have this problem or am I just unlucky to get one like this?

I'd say it was just that one, else it would've been raised before.

...You do realise you're still aloud to have one, right? Just re-order...

If you want one that much, why didn't you ask for a replacement, instead of a refund?

Just phoned selectbikes and asked about the others in stock, phil (I'm guess it's him) who answered said the other lite frames mounts are more square and not so angled so I'm going to do a swap if the mounts are better.

Ahhh, thats unlucky.

Being a new frame this should've been picked up pre-sale but if its getting sorted then its ok.

You can't expect a seller to check everything. Something like the mounts being a bit wonky would be very hard to notice unless you were looking for it. Most frames are fine but every now and then there will be slight problems.

Righto got Phil (the guy who answered the phone?) to send me pics of the other lite frame he had, still ever so slightly \ / but I'm okay with it. From the pic its far straighter (or vertical) than what I had so I guess it should be better.

What you think?

That's just dumb. I think it's bloody unacceptable when you pay out hundreds for something that's clearly defective and you the consumer have to pay for the return. Yeah maybe they can't check every bolt for a defect but frames, com'on, that's shit.

No dig at you but think about it. You bought your frame, you waiting anxiously for it, turns out you can't ride it. And you have to pay a tenner at least to send it back because the shop asks you send it insured. Happy?

I imagen Select paid for the return though in this case?

I think you might be getting a little carried away. I've accepted that it's a defect and ofcourse offered a refund. After that I was asked to check the other frame I have in stock and sent the pictures as shown above. One side is still slightly wonkey but I've tried a brake on it and it sets up perfectly fine to which "Weirdoku" has accepted.

Once the frame is returned I will be refunding the postage as it's a manufacturing defect, I have no problem with this. When I read this topic I thought I had done everything to help and get "Weirdoku" (Without stating his name) up and running but it seems some people don't think so.

You have to remember from my side of things how much I've tried to help with the issue. I've fitted the headset before I sent the frame out free of charge, I'll be removing the headset when the frame returns then installing it to the new frame again, free of charge, I'll also be paying for x3 sets of postage possibly equaling £30. I'm willing to do that to ensure the customer is happy even if it means I loose profit on the final item even with the item being on sale. It's unfortunate some frames are defected from the manufacturer and I understand the customer will always be urging for their order as quickly as posisble, I'm just the same, but sometimes these things can happen and I try to give 100% pride to help rectify any issue.

I hope this has cleared up any missunderstanding to anybody reading.

I'm sorry how is that dumb? I've seen how select bikes operate and even another major trials shop and I'm telling you now they don't check every frame is perfectly square. This should already be done when the frames are welded together. You can't expect them to make sure the headset cups fit, the brake mounts are threaded correctly, the bb threads are fine and it goes in square etc. That would just take up too much time and 99 times out of 100 would be pointless.

In this case there was a problem and its been solved what more can be said?

I'd also like to add that the mounts being a bit wonky is not a problem in my opinion, anyone with a decent ability to set a magura up would be able to set their brake up fine on that frame. There is a lot of room for adjustment on maguras.

Im pretty sure the mounts on my lite are a bit wonky too, seeing as i couldnt get an echo booster to fit. My brake still works dandy, just had to find a slightly wider booster and all was good.

Sorry to drag you in like this Phil, just wanted to check if the mounts were acceptable.

I am very happy with the way Phil has helped me with this and he has been very nice to offer a replacement and even offered to fit the headset for me. I wasn't told about the postage being refunded but he has said here he will which is a bonus. It's not that expensive to send a frame anyway, I sent my GU TP frame for £6.85 80 ish miles away to Kent (anyone want to see the receipt?).

I honestly was ok with paying for the P&P to return the frame because it reallly wasn't Phil's fault for some dodgy mounts. I also accept that frames are sometimes not completely aligned. My other £250 bike had slightly offset dropouts but did I care? No because it really didn't cause a problem.

I didn't even mention about a replacement in my first email to Phil, yet he offered to which was real nice of him. And I'll certainly buy again from him.

I didn't mean the seller its not select bikes responsability, i mean echo should check each frame, its time consuming but i know of other companys that do.

Select bikes are doing far more than they have to and my wierdoku is being reasonable about it so i think everythings perfect from there views.

Phil must've paid the manufacturer for the batch of frames, and they were sent to him with dodgey Magura mounts. They should'e been checked for defects before there were sent out to the retailers, but they weren't.

I had no intention to sound dickish towards you Phill. My question was just a question, nothing negative in there towards you. I've bought from you a few times, and i remember you helped me out one time with a defect i had, but that happened during riding. And you also offered me a discount because i ordered a product that wasn't in stock. But i'd order from you more if you answered your phone (Y)

My main point being; i just don't think such an obvious thing should go unnoticed and then the consumer has to suffer. I don't expect the headtube to be checked Anal_Teflon as yeah that isn't a 2 second job. Checking a frame for minor storage damage etc is!

I don't mean to start an argument but not being able to fit a booster to a frame isn't fair when it should be compatible.

And as for the frames coming out of China unchecked, i thought everyone knew Echo has little quality control?

I thought the Bionic was good. No better or worse than Echo. If i liked the geo i would of kept it. Disk mount and lighter than a Control. ? :)

yeah it's nice...but its not top quality! A trials frame without headtube reinforcement for a start...
