rocktrials
Yo, need some assistance. I have an Alienware desktop and through the night it has turned itself off. It won't turn back on. When hitting the power button, the front and back fans want to start moving, but then nothing (also there is a flash of the alienware lights in the case) What I've done so far: Removed PSU and cleaned thoroughly Removed Audio and Video cards Removed RAM Removed Heatsink/fan Tried a different PSU but didnt even do anything, possibly because was 500w and mine is 750w? Shitty thing is, its all this special alienware connecting shit to psu :/ Only possibly thoughts were PSU issue, but everything seems to receive power, all peripherals receive power it seems - or issue with heatsink fan>? Please help, gonna call Alienware tomorrow before I see PC technician. Thsanks

Thsanks My alienware laptop had this same problem wouldnt wake up from sleep screen just stayed blac the problem was with my radeon hd5870 cards some models came with problems which had to have there bios flashed fairly easy to do download bios from dell put on usb memory stick and boot from stick on start up. Not sure on your gpu so this may not be of any help other than that i also flashed my bios up to the A10 you could try that. Are you also getting bsod or it just the sleep problem. Muel
He removed the video card, and it's a desktop not a laptop. Rocktrials, that issue sounds like dead power supply, motherboard or possibly RAM to me. Given that you've tried another PSU, (without the graphics card in there? 500w is enough to run any single CPU/single GPU setup available), and you've played with the RAM I'd say dead motherboard unfortunately. With it being Alienware, (why did you do it to yourself? ), best bet is to get in touch with them. Hope it's still under warranty!

rocktrials
Yo Muel, cheers for input lad. Going to have to try and contact Alienware, but not under warrenty. Had it over 2 years now. Went for the Alienware cause I always wanted once since I was young Should never have bought it. Very tempted to just buy a brand new spec from OCUK ready for BF3 etc (Was planning on upgrading gfx anyway) Thing is, mobo gets lights on....? Muel
They behave in funny ways when a mobo dies, I've never seen one that was just completely dead. If you want something new for BF3, would it be possible to hang on for a while? Ivy Bridge is being released on November 15th. Personally though I'd fix the Alienware and hang fire for DDR4. (As I am doing now, by build is getting on as I first built it in Oct 09, but I'm dragging it out as long as I can). If they can't help, don't suppose you live anywhere near Sheff? If you want you can come round mine with it and we can spend a day swapping bits into mine to check them all off.
rocktrials
My parents live right next to Sheffield, but me and the PC are in Ireland. What it's gonna roughly cost to get me Alienware back...mobo - £80, psu/cables £150 ? But this might not fix, plus theres an upgrade for gfx which I want
rocktrials
Update: Tried friends PSU, no luck. Tried my gfx card in his system, didnt want to work, his is working fine. Both have GTX260, mine is 1.8gb, his is 800mb - does this means it's fried too? :/
Muel
Could just be an incompatible graphics card? At this stage it's very hard to say what should and shouldn't work (bloody alienware ). If the PSU went pop, it could have taken other things with it, although that's very rare it does happen. I have a problem. I'm trying to run a load of virtual machines on my gaming machine, so it will be both a gaming rig and a server. Brilliant! Only one ridiculously power hungry computer to run. Apart from I need multiple network cards, but the space is already full of graphics cards. I could worm one in there but it would restrict air flow to the lower graphics card, which I'd rather avoid. Bit stumped to be honest! I like playing with servers. I think it's my new hobby.
rocktrials
Confused what to do. Don't know how to go about fixing it as I have no exact clue what's buggered. To try and fix or to simply splash out on a new pc at £1200ish :/

I could worm one in there but it would restrict air flow to the lower graphics card, which I'd rather avoid. Bit stumped to be honest! Using a flexy PCI/PCIE riser you can usually sort that. Even easier if you have a large case that can accomadate EEATX with more expansion slots than normal.
Muel
I don't have that kinda case, and to be honest the best place for it air flow wise would be in the free PCI slot. Thanks for the idea though! Winning? Anyone got any experience with these?
Revolver
What server are you trying to run?
Muel
Eventual plan is to have a server in the cupboard under the stairs running CentOS/Ubuntu Server as the primary OS, then multiple VMs in that. At the moment I'm just playing with VMs in VMWare Player in W7.
rocktrials
Found it out. It boots without 8pin powering PCI slots. So possibly my gfx overheated and destroyed something?
Muel
Hmmmm. Does that board work with a different GPU with the 8pin connected? You've already tried another PSU but have you tried it without the GPU in place?
rocktrials
Nope, didnt want to fry my mates gfx and need to buy him one I'll grab a spare card possibly next week, why what you thinking?
Muel
Just eliminating stuff. If it boots with no GPU but the 8pin connected then it's just a new GPU you be needing. Could be a knackered line on the PSU though that feeds the 8pin, or that the PCIE lanes have gone pop on the motherboard. Just need to eliminate them one by one! Please don't take this as me being harsh, but could you not have just Googled "DVI to VGA Adaptor"? Yes, they're widely available and on eBay I would guess rather cheaply. Even the little ATI X3 what ever it was that cost me £30 and it had a DVI and VGA output still came with a DVI to VGA adaptor.
