isitafox
Just stick with the upgrade version then, to be fair anything would be an improvement on Vista!
Muel
HALP!! I'm going to upgrade my cpu soon, I'm currently running: Pentium D 2.66Ghz 2.5GB ram (soon to be 4) Geforce 8600 GTS overclocked Windows vista ultimate (possibly windows 7 ultimate 64bit if needs be) I'm going to upgrade my cpu, to this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160547581585&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Will this make a noticeable difference at all? (obviously with the extra ram) Also it says "instruction set 64bit" - does this mean it will perform/need to run on a 64 bit OS ? It will make a slight difference, but there are far better socket 775 CPUs out there that can be had for less. My brother is running an E5300, it's currently sat at 3.46ghz on stock voltages (up from 2.66ghz). I'd recommend getting the E5400, and 4gb of 1066mhz ram. This will mean you can leave the multipliers alone, and simply up the FSB to 267mhz, meaning the RAM will be running at just over its full 1066mhz (highest default is 800mhz for DDR2), but the CPU will be running at 3.60ghz. That's the route I'd take with a dual core, if you fancy a quad I believe the Q6600 is considered to be the best value socket 775 quad, but I have no experience with them. Please get rid of Vista, and run Windows 7. I run windows 7 Ultimate and love it - Vista is evil! Oh, and I seem to remember that a 32bit OS wont support full 4gb ram, normally only around 3.5gb of the 4gb (or whatever is installed) It can recognise roughly 3.5gb total RAM. This includes the graphics RAM. Because I have 2 1gb graphics cards, if I was running 32bit it would only recognise 1.5gb of the system RAM. (I think, no evidence to back this up, just what I can remember from forum chat). Definitely upgrade to W7 64bit as well, it runs so much smoother and quicker than Vista for me. I have the Professional version, because it was free through my Uni, the home version would do though, most of the extra features are a bit pointless IMO. Improving on my question I suppose what I really want to know is what is going to be better for video editing in a laptop, fast processor/dual core processor????? For video editing you need a strong CPU and lots of RAM. I would go for a decent quad and at least 4gb of RAM. You could get by with a dual core and 2gb, but it would take a while to render. isitafox
Was looking at at least 4gb ram either as standard or upgrading it myself but was unsure on processors. Bit of a pain it having to be a laptop otherwise I'd be down Bowlers for a cheap deal on a custom build, will have a scout around then! EDIT: Would something running 3gig ram standard and a core i3 be upto a bit of basic editing?? Edited February 27, 2011 by isitafox
Muel
I can't really advise as to makes and models I'm afraid, I know jack shit about laptops. Netbooks I'm slightly more up on, although I don't know about the specific models. I only really know the Samsung NC10 anyway, as I have one (did have two, one as a Hackbook project that failed). Mark W
So, after downloading a few keygens yesterday Chrome and Firefox now don't work, and only Internet Explorer does. Connection's fine (and used it to download stuff from other programmes like iTunes, etc.), just with Chrome it stays on the 'Loading...' thing for webpages permanently (apart from where it asks if I want to kill that unresponsive shit), and Firefox runs - in so much as Firefox.exe is shown as a running process - but doesn't appear. Run a few virus checkers and apart from some random spyware type shit it found it didn't actually find anything that would be related to what's happening. Anyone got any ideas? Haven't tried reinstalling anything yet because it seems like there should be a more straight-forward solution...
Muel
Wipe it, start again. Seriously it'll be so much faster than pissing about reinstalling and fiddling.

I had a similar thing and it gradually got worse till i blue screened every 5 mins, none of my anti virus could find it except one, however that couldn't get to it. After a quick google I got THIS program which found whatever it was, deleted it and my problems were solved, worth a try?

Dwarf Shortage
Right, so I installed Linux, shitty .iso so it was pretty unstable, got a copy of Windows7 I'm trying to install, but something's gone mental and I can't get windows to co-operate. I put the disk in, boot from CD-ROM, but nothing, it just hangs. Am I right in thinking that I need to format the drive before I can switch, because it's not FAT32? Muel
Should just run fine, W7 uses NTFS not Fat32. I've never had an issue like that, but it's worth a try. Just boot a Live CD, delete the current partitions, make a new one, format it to NTFS, try the W7 CD again. It is a legal/proper copy of W7 isn't it? JDâ„¢
Nobody here would know, because of course we all use genuine copies of all the software we use.
Muel
Most of the time they're fine, but I've heard a few scare stories. People cracking them but adding in software to track every keystroke or every website you go on, then email it out to them seems a common one. Personally the only OS I've had illegally was OSX though, and that never ran for long enough for me to find out if it was dodgy or not. Nobody here would know, because of course we all use genuine copies of all the software we use. You're not allowed to post stuff about how to obtain or use illegal software, but stating that you currently use or have used software illegally in the past is OK as far as I'm aware. trialsmax04
Hello can anyone please help me. I recieved a brand new HP G56 130sa laptop for my 18th birthday on the 4th of march, and the touch pad is faulty It keeps locking up by itself and to unfreeze it you have to restart the computer. Looking on the web this looks to be a common fault with this model, and so far i havnt found any solution to it. HP have told me to discharge flea power (done), Reset BIOS (done) update BIOS (done), Uninstall touchpad drivers and update (done) and to no avail. Basicly i want to take it back to the shop (Currys) for a refund to purchace a differnt make and model, but allong the lines of the same spec (4GB ram, 500GB HDD, Intel T4500, Windows 7 64 bit) but the laptop was purchased in january (only registered on the 4th) so im hoping i can get a refund? Also can anyone recommend a suitable replacement for the above? been looking at the Acer 5742z, but it has a Intel p6100 (or P6200 depending on the newer model or not), so would this be as fast as my T4500? cheers guys

Hence why I cringe when people take out 'extended warranties' at PC World on a computer that is already covered by the manufactures. In my experience HP are pretty good at faulty returns - however you may have to talk to a robotic Indian for 3 hours first. For a hint, control the conversation, do not let him sway off track otherwise they never understand the problem and you'll be fobbed off with driver issues. Luke Dunstan
I have a 40" Samsung lcd TV, and noticed there is a line about 2/3rds of the way down the screen. Black and then fades out. Its only a few months old which is pretty annoying. Does anyone know what can cause this, or if there is a quick remedy before I go down the route of taking it back to Argos? Technically not a PC question, but it doubles up as my PC monitor.
