Muel
Errr, I wouldn't say "yes" straight away to that. Every single laptop and telly I've ever owned didn't have HDMI. If your laptop has HDMI, and your telly has HDMI, then it'll work.

monkeyseemonkeydo
Ok, hardware tech question for y'all... We have a PC which has a single PCI slot, a PCI-E 16X slot and two PCI-E 1X slots in the motherboard. We have just received a framegrabber card which unfortunately has a PCI-E 4X connector on it. We've tried slotting the card in the 16X slot, and it fits, but the computer refuses to use the onboard graphics (selected in bios so it shouldn't be looking elsewhere) and instead seems to try and use the framegrabber as a graphics card. And fails. Is there any way of converting a 1X to accept the 4X or something to allow the card to be used in the PC? I've come across a riser card but fear this will screw up the spacing. Any ideas?! Only thing I can think of is to use a riser/adapter thing, but as you say will screw up the spacing and they don't always work properly. What's the spec of the computer? Might be able to upgrade the motherboard for around the same price and you're sorted then.

It's a bit strange- I've read in a couple of places now that the 4X should be able to plug straight into the 16X slot and work fine but when you do this it seems to automatically cease using the onboard graphics, even though that's set in the BIOS. The other options I'm looking at is getting a converter to use the X16 graphics card attached via a converter thing to one of the 1X slots and then use the 16X slot for the 4X card... dunno! Muel
All sounds way too dodgy with all them adapters and shizz mate... I'd say BIOS update, make sure that the BIOS is still set to use the on-board graphics and not PCI-E, failing that I'd get a new motherboard in. Only thing that's sure to work and would offer a more open upgrade path in future.
monkeyseemonkeydo
Cool, cheers for the advice. We've just had a guy from our IT centre in who is going to supply us with a new machine tomorrow morning which has an X4 slot in it as standard so hopefully that'll sort it! Muel
Yeh that'll do it. I did the same thing with my recent server upgrade. Was planning on changing the motherboard and RAM. Ended up buying an almost complete machine from a guy at work and just building a new server. Now I have two servers, and don't know what to do with the old one... Muel
So shit I can't give it away. 2.4ghz Pentium 4 (or something like), 512mb RAM, 40gb HDD. Just chucked it on top of the wardrobe lol.
JD™
That's fair enough, similar to the one I'm using that is appalling so no point anyway!
Luke Rainbird
While we're loosely on the subject of motherboards, can anyone recommend a reasonably cheap AM3 mobo with 6GB/s SATA and ACHI support? Not definitely gonna do it, but I fancy throwing in an SSD at some point but my current board doesn't have an option for ACHI so is going to be a massive dick if I put one in as it stands. Muel
No time to check Luke, but I have a Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H, couldn't recommend strongly enough. (Or the 990 version if there is one). Stay away from Asus on AMD at the moment, unless you go for the £200+ boards! I had one last year, was wank. The vcore wobble by 0.1v, so when set to 1.55v it was going as high as 1.65v... My chip has shown signs of degrading ever since. JD. May soon have a CPU, motherboard, RAM and GPU bundle I'll be looking to shift. 1.8ghz dual core, 2gb RAM, 256mb 7600GT. Won't be up to anything strenuous but would be alright for general office stuff/browsing. Will be built up and fully tested before sending, as I'm not certain if the board and CPU are actually compatible. (Should be fine, but I like to check). Also never even seen the GPU run yet. Fish-Finger-er
Sounds better than what I've got going on, lemme know when it comes up mate. sorry to sale hijack, but ive got a quad core phenom 9600( 4 x 2.2) an asrock nf5-sli mobo, 4 gb of ddr2 ram, I can throw in a case, and a psu, if youd be interested. no graphics card, but I would for an extra few quid be willing to chuck my gtx460 in there, but in that case you'd need to get a new psu as well, as the psu is only 460w, and wouldnt power that graphics card(would power my old 8600gt fine)
JD™
All I'm running it as is a media centre - so all it has to do to keep me happy is run 1080p footage to my Samsung TV nicely. By my understanding, that just means I need a non archaic processor and a GFX card with a HDMI out. I basically don't plan to be spending much cash (think sub £100 being preferable) so I just keep my eyes open for anything coming up which might suit. Cheers guys. Muel
460w will be fine for that setup Kev, no sweat. A 460 would be a huge overkill for a HTPC though haha. Errrm, JD, to be honest mate I suggest you buy Kev's. My bundle will build an alright desktop to run XP so my Mum can do her b-weekly Anne Summers shop, but not really up to what you're after. Fish-Finger-er
How much you thinking then Kev? Cheers Sam, nice to do that rather than just grab the cash! right ive had a rummage and ill sell you this lot for £60 + postage(i know its worth more, i payed £40 for the ram 12 months ago, but its just sat cluttering up my room) amd phenom 9600 quad core processor Asrock nf5 sli 1394 mobo( + cpu cooler etc) 4gb ddr 2 800mhz 400w power supply lieteon dl dvdrw drive(lightscribe) 500gb maxtor harddrive - although i want you to format it before use, i aint got a clue whats on there. only point i cant come through on is the case, ive got a case, its yours if you want it, but its been pillaged, it has no screws, and is missing a side panel, so yes you can mount all your stuff in it, but it'd be wiser to just buy a £8 case off ebuyer. would then leave you money to buy something like a 8400gs, or a hd5450 for like £25 brand new.id do the same lot with the gtx460 for like £115 + postage. but as i say you will need a new psu, so the build will end up being more like £150. Luke Rainbird
A 1Tb drive new will set you back between £80 and £180 at the mo due to all the flooding in Thailand. Scary shit. I was looking to pick a couple of drives up in the near future, but it's going to be ages 'til things stabalise again Edit; Actually, if you do decide to shift it give me a shout, may have it off you depending on what payday looks like this month
