Mtchell
Just got new Czar 20 with Echo SL forks I have had a FSA PIG headset fitted! by a bike shop , I went for a ride today and found the forks move back and forth slightly when the front brake is applied. The headset can,t be worn becase it was brand fire new from tarty, Ive tighten the top cap as tight a possible.I have the star nut left over front the headset because the shop said i didn't need it as theres 1 in the forks which is true enough.I don,t want to take the bike back is there any thing i could do to correct it ??? Any help would be highly appreicated. Edited December 21, 2008 by Mtchell
MikeCottTrials
I think you'll find (so long as the bearings etc are all placed in the correct order) that its just not tight enoughTry unscrewing the bolt a little and banging it down so the star nut goes in further, then give it another tighten also make sure you front wheel is in tight, obviously ive never made the mistake of having a loose front wheel and thinking its the headset
Mtchell
Are you talking about the star nut which the top cap bolt attaches to? If so its welded to the inside of the forks mate i think.Wheels tight .
N.Wood
Did you undo the stem bolts before you tightened the top cap bolt?
Mtchell
Did you undo the stem bolts before you tightened the top cap bolt?Lol yep . What if i used a long bolt to it pull down harder or do you think this will damage the star nut ??Sorry for the Noob questions lol
16 years later
I’d say try another stem stacker, is your stem above the level of the top of the steerer tube? You may not be getting enough tension, I’d say chuck another stacker on. See if the works out. You can put it on top of the stem or the bottom. Mtchell
If it helps i can see the movements on the top crown, is it??, which the spacers sit on top .I’d say try another stem stacker, is your stem above the level of the top of the steerer tube? PaRtZ
If it helps i can see the movements on the top crown, is it??, which the spacers sit on top .Nope slightly below the fork stem top This maybe my problem I think so.If this is right, and you can see fork steerer poking out ABOVE your stem, then when you're clamping the top cap down, all your doing is squashing the steerer and not clamping anything. You can solve it by as said stacking it up more underneath, or trimming the steerer about 5mm. Bare in mind don't cut it too much so theres nothing for the stem to clamp onto, but you need to take enough off so that its well below the top of the stem. Take into account the thickness of the topcap itself too!

weirdoku
Are you missing one of these headset wedge? The forks shouldn't move at all if theres a wedge on the top and bottom of the headset.
RossMcd
It might be possible that the fork steerer is touching the stem cap, making it not tighten any more. try adding a stacker of cutting your fork steerer slightly (remebering to knock down the star nut too)
Dan6061
Most likely to be your brake pads wobbling. To see if the headset is tight, turn the front of the bike round 90degrees, and try it then. If it wobbles, then the headset is loose, if not, it's your brake pads wobbling.Nothing to worry about really, most disc brake pads have slight play in them. Sidehop Stuart
Mine did this. I realised my forks didn't have a crown race and now they don't wobble.
