How I Got Into Trials

I got into it when I was watching the Chainspotting video. I was absolutely amazed at the two Martins hopping around in the Uk and then when they were battling it out with Hans Rey in California that was it for me...I just thought right I want to have a go at that. The problem was I had a 21.5 inch Giant with small travel suspension forks on and plastic pedals and to top it off I couldn't even bunny hop.

So after many months of slowly getting better at bunny hopping by practicing hopping over a piece of bamboo laid on top of trainers I finally invested in a GT Zaskar and built that up into a trials bike. It was a pain trying to get a bashring as trials wasn't that big then.

Anyway, I got out of trials when I went to Uni however now reading all the posts on here and watching stuff on youtube I'm really excited about starting it up again.....so hopefully I will be getting a Zoo Pitbull for Xmas and transfering all the stuff off my old GT to this. Can't wait!!!

:o What does he ride then?

He doesnt ride a trials bike atm, but he might be getting my onza spyrogyra when i get an adamant. I got into trials through watching the 7 stanes trials display team and watching danny mac. What a guy! I really like neil tunnicliffe's riding, very powerful and huge gaps. I dont quite have the strength for big moves like him, but im improving every day!

Haha

Good topic

I use to ride my mountain day in day out, and try all sorts on it walls the job lot, lol

but i found out the bike wasn't made for trials, which at the time i didn't know about, But i quit all the bike business and grew up >_<

But one night on the town i mentioned it to my mate Meki , And i couldn't believe he was already at it.. so i got a banger of a bike hardly worked and went from there.

I,m glad i started trials as its given me some sense of achievement, and each and every time i manage to do some thing new .

:D

It's excellent to know that there are riders on here that know what Chainspotting is, for some reason I thought I would be the oldest one on here. Just out of interest has anyone seen the old Dirt and Getta Grip videos? (And yes I did say videos....god they were poor quality but I thought the riding was immense - it really inspired me to just pick up my old Giant Iguana and start thrashing it about when I was about 14).

Also out of I interest are there any trials magazines you can buy or is it all restricted to columns and sections in general mountain biking/ bmxing mags?

Cheers for any help.

Ooh it sends a shiver down my spine thinking about all these old memories lol. Yeah me and my mate used to sit there watching Chainspotting, Tricks and Stunts, Down and Double Down all on VHS haha :D

Love the way you describe the riding type as immense, back then it was bloody awsome! huge WOW! factor haha. But not the whole quality and level of riding is just inhuman at times :P Who would have thought Trials would have become this popular? Days of Sunday rides in london with Luke Edwards / Tim / Stephen :P seems so long ago (defently need to scan in the old pictures and upload them :D

Interesting thread... How peeps got into trials? Has to be the two Martins. With there original Tricks and stunts video... How long ago was that??? lol

Tricks and stunts was amazing! (and cheesey in some parts)

I think the first one came out in 2001,

Then the second came out in the same year

I think its earlier than that bud, i started trials back when i was at high school so thats pre 2000... Cutting our chainrings down on our welded shimano cranks to make a bash ring and using the 22T ring as our drive :Plol

I didn't even know they made a second one. May try and get my hands on that - was it on VHS or DVD as I don't know if I can bear watching a video with the quality being so poor and the sound being Grade A cack!!!

Whatever happened to Hans Rey? All I remember about him from Chainspotting (and I think he was in Tricks and Stunts too) was him barking on about a chocolate foot!!?? My thoughts at the time about that was having a chocolate foot for trials is surely just stupid as the power you put through your legs would surely snap your chocolate foot right off. :giggle:
