Any Tips On Trying To Keep Snail Cams In Place?

i set up my back wheel straight, set up my brake and go out to ride, after a few hours my back wheel has moved. i have set up my back wheel numerous times now and it just keeps on happening does any body have any tips on keeping them in place? its a monty 221 pr frame, viz hub and monty knotched cams if that makes any difference. i really need to sort this problem out as soon as possible as i want to ride lots over the christmas holidays!! thanks in advance ozzy.x

bolts are as tight as i can possibly do them......so i dont think its that. ill have a think about fileing the knotches bigger id like some more ideas first though..cheers.

Have you greased the bolt threads? Increases the possible tightening torque massively :)

Strip any paint off the dropout area where the wheel is being clamped.

If your frame is painted, as the wheel moves around it will be rubbing off little bits of paint etc, these will then act a 'bearings' between the snail and the dropout, meaning the wheel can slip a little easier

Worked for my BMX and meant i never needed to run any tensioners.

another possibility is to take the file to the actual dropout.

Rough up the area which is normally clamped on, also make sure you rub the cam up a little as well on its inside face.

notching the snails a bit more and greasing the bolt threads seems to be sensible too.

That sounds like a good plan to me. Gonna give that a try on my zm2 as I have the same issues, although adjustments aren't as frequent as the OP mentioned.

You shouldn't need to notch the cams more.

Are you winding the cam up with your hands until it won't go any further? If yes, get a spanner/pliers and hold onto the cam ends, wind it up one more notch. You shouldn't be able to move this at all with your hands afterwards, your chain should also be nice and tight.

I had a similar problem, winding the cam with my hands, they kept slipping. But after winding it up one more notch with pliers/spanner, mine has not slipped once. That was 1 month ago.

Snapped an axle? Sounds impossible! They must be really poop!

My cams (16mm holes) goes on my hubs, not on my axle so I guess I don't have to worry about my axles.

But seriously, cams really don't move/harder to move out of place if they are done up tight.

A longer allen key (or spanner).

I guess whilst everyone is on the topic of making it tighter, having an allen that is like double the length of one that comes in a normal allen key set obviously gives you greater leverage, but there is a significant difference in amount of tightening torque you get from it.
