Captain Scarlet
Cats are really good, if you get a cat from a shelter then it will most likely be already litter trained, and if your buying from someone who has breeded them then they will have been litter trained before they can be taken away from the mother.Cats are quite independant and can easily go about on their own, depending on your area it may or may not be a good idea to let a cat out a lot, (I live by a busy road and my cat which is just over a year old hasn't been out yet, she's not anxious to run out the door when its open so its not like it bothers her).Obviously as cats are very independant, do make sure you get a regular chance to check them over (if they have been in a scrap, hurt themselves, loosing hair etc.)It would also be wise to have pet insurance taken out, as vets bills can soon rack up, (my last cat had to be put down because of an incurable tumour, but leading up to this the vet didn't know if she had a broken pelvis, back, etc because of the symptoms, and once anaesthetic and x-rays start happening you have a big bill on your hands, luckily she was covered as it mounted up to £2000).Other thing to remember is to get the cat spayed or neutered. My dad has always chosen female cats, as they are the least habituous sex, as males usually tend to spray which is when they wet all around the house, which would be a way of marking their territory or importance towards female cats.Thats the most important bits, as well as the obvious things such as toys, scratching post, something to sleep on, food etc.Breed and markings really aren't important, just to taste and budget (I know that sounds bad), although I will say stay clear of just white cats. (As they are prone to sun burn in the hotter months, and many can be born deaf or partially deaf). My moggy has tortoiseshell markings with white (will have to get some pictures up she's amazing).Lets face it if you want a cat to love for many years (or in this case your family), you'll want to think about a nice looking one, most interesting and beautiful markings to go far would be tortoiseshell or tabby, just so many variations every one looks different. manuel
I love cats! Mine is nearly 20 years old, I have had it since I was 5! Its well and truly part of the family. It needs feeding twice a day, otherwise it just sleeps all day. It craps outside and sleeps on my bed ever night f**k - thats good work. 20 is and old cat. Mine made 18, then got hit by some assclown who left him - smashed his hips to pieces. Made it home and lasted a good week through surgery, but had to be put down as he couldn't move his rear legs and struggled to eat and drink. I was right there when the vet did it - should have taken over 2 mins for the injection to work but took 20 secs as he was so weak. He was there for my entire childhood - probably one of the saddest (If not the) days of my life.So Ash - If you can afford it - and they will love whatever cat you get them - do it - they are awesome, like having another bro/sister almost. 16 years later
Yeah I would say get a female one, I think the boys can smell (not sure if that’s cats or rats lol). If I where you I would talk to you family about it and make the decision together and then go and pick one out together. Cats are really great pets thought we’ve had lots over the years. We live more in the country and they just do what they please, we have a cat flap so they can go in and out as they please, you can also lock the cat flap which is good. They just go out and can have a shit and look around and what not.Over all cats are great pets, however I would strongly suggest that if you live near a busy road not to get one.So yeah I would say talk to the family and decide together whether to get one or not. Haz
I love my cat. More than my family, sometimes. And that may seem strange. But, I look at my cat and I just smile.Only 10 years old, but he's a health little beast. He lets himself in and out the cat flap, we feed him twice a day and he just chills the rest of the time. Ash-Kennard
as prawn can assure you i live out in the sticks, so pretty much sounds like an ideal pet. usually with something like this i would mention and discuss with the famuily, but then it wouldnt really be much of a surprise would it. also, we get lots of mice in the house so yay kitty
N.Wood
As has been said, get one from a home/sanctuary place (ask for a fun one, I'd imagine it'd be pretty shit if it didn't wanna be touched/played with or whatever) and go nuts.I've wanted a cat all my life, but no one is ever at home (i'm at uni anyway) so it'd be pretty cruel. Dan6061
Seriously though, if you do get one, make sure it's a ginger one! They're more fun.Our ginger cat is around 10 now? And he's mad! Always charging around the house, playing in boxes... all sorts. Every year at christmas when I go up into the loft to get the fake tree/etc down, he's usually first up the ladder and stays in the loft for hours! Also woke up one morning, went into the bathroom and he was asleep in the sink! Also used to sit in the bath for a bit... I'd turn the tap on to make him jump out, but he used to sit and watch the water creep up to his feet, then decide to get out.
grant_hundley
I don't think it's just ginger cats....I think it's just the way you treat them, like if you get bored of them and don't play with them as much they will get boring. But if you play with it a lot it'll stay more fun. Dan6061
All our cats have been treated the same...Tabby one's craves attention, and sits on your lap gently clawing you, tabby and white one's always ran away from everything...always done it. When she does actually come up to you, she doesn't shut up and nuts you! And the ginger one's just a nutter!
grant_hundley
My cat (just a black and white one) is a bit crazy..Comes and wakes you up in morning by shoving her nose up yours She plays fetch with straws.Chases her tail quite a bit.Sometimes she'll have a mad half hour and just run around for ages Does your cat ever sleep in random positions? Like upside down, stretched and twisted? Or is it normal

Mark W
If you want a cat to stop scratching something, rub it (Not the cat...) with lemon or orange zest. Cats hate citrus, so if they smell it they piss off sharpish. As has been said - get one from a shelter. You can still get younger cats from there, and it's a much better proposition than just buying a kitten from a shop, especially if you're not 100% your family will want to keep it anyway. 16 years later
Yeah, one of our cats used to love water, whenever you ran a bath he would stand on the edge and put his paws in the water. He would also sleep in the bath.Because of this we called him Nower after Newers Ark.

Fish-Finger-er
Doing so would cause that cat to run away from itself.Wonder if this works with bigger cats, i.e could i cover meself in lemon peel, and run into the enclosure at bristol zoo, and take down a frightened tiger
