Rear Brake For Mod:hs-33 Or Disc(bb7)?

Hi guys!

I would like to try a disc brake on rear on my mod. But my front foot is right =>i'm doing side-hop to left. And i wouldn't like to pay big money. Thats why i would like to set on rear bb7 + 160mm rotor+fr5 lever.

I've got some question.

Who use this brake on rear say me please, what you think about it in your experience? And with compare hs-33? I would like to hear adavatages/disadvantages of bb7 with compare maggie :) .

And because i'm doing side on left i think about rotor. Is it easy to damage rotor on side?

And you doing side to left?

Is it so it's cool :)

I also think that isn't a problem but i would like to hear another opinions. And my guess is confirmed)

I really like hs33's . i like them because you can set them up how you like and you have also got the choice of so many different pads.

Thanks to all.

Well, i understand that rear disc brake+side to left isn't a problem.

Now i would like to know which is better:hs-33 or avid bb7(160mm)? Advantages/disadvantages of bb7 with compare magura please.

I'm already read Gogz- and BenJohn-Hynes opinion and i'm interestied in other opinions.

Don't use cable discs on the rear, they feel awful - spongy and with complete lack of feedback due to the long cable and all it's twists and turns. The only proper solution is a hydro. I've ran both a BB Avid and a Hope, and there's no comparison between them on the rear wheel. However, as a front brake, I'd say the Avid is better.

In terms of power, a 180mm Hope will outperform an HS33 even with the best of pads and a grind. Haven't had experience with smaller rotors but a 160mm is probably good enough. And don't worry about hitting the disc, it's not as easy as it may seem - even with a 200mm rotor.

Ive ran a back disk for a year now and i have never hit my disk on sidehops. THeres pros and cons about disks. Pros: There mint in the wet, you can buckle your wheel and it still be fine and there less hassel imo. But the cons: They tend to slip sometimes, they are abit fiddely to set up or stop rubbing and when you get oil on them. They are poor. >_<

to be honest the cables arent a problem if you get the right ones, the gore bike cables are awesome, a little bit expensive but they come in a little lubed tube, and they dont stretch much if at all.

but i do agree a hope would be a lot better.

Agreed, i hate rear mechanical disks, you just don't get any feedback from the lever, so i never feel sure if its on off, and you dont get any real modulation, Get a hope mono trial 2nd hand on here you can get a rear one for 50quid and there perfect.

Thanks!

I wrote in my first post that now i haven't got money to buy hope. Yes i read other topic and know that there are great but it much more expensive=>hope isn't a variant.

I've had vee and now i've have hs-33. It work well. There aren't people who use disc on rear on trial bikes(20/26) in my city... But now i want to try something new - disc brake :)

I used double disc on my Monty for 2 weeks. It worked amazing for a little while. But with front freewheel and snail cams as well as disc alignment it kinda got a bit of a pain the ass. I found my BB7 to have no real sponge on the final setup. I original used a XTR cable but then changed to a Odyssey and then it was sweet. Yeah it had no modulation but i kinda just dealt with it. Like a HS33 with grind can be so bitey that it also offers no modulation, but with the disc it's silent. I thought a real cool thing about it was being able to ride silently, that was the big one for me.

But because of the movement of the wheel and my annoying chain slap i ditched it. I also had a bent rotor. I'd like to try it again but with vertical dropouts or using the real Monty snail cam bolts rather than big bolts which don't work too well with notched cams. I'd probably go to a 160mm rotor as well, i think 185mm is pretty overkill when the disc is at it's best.

eskimo , good post! Thanks...

Silent work is good (Y)

And what about Nokon cables?

No worries. Nokon cables are expensive. They like to rattle too. They won't be as stiff as a Odyssey Linear because the hosing is made up of loads of little metal spines. Like a Human spine you know? Are you not familiar with the Linear cable? The Odyssey one is the best and costs around £6/7 here. It's weird, it's not flimsy like a normal cable, it's got plenty of steel lining in it. It's impossible to cut through with normal pliers or cable cutters, you need some beefy cutters that can take out spokes.

There aren't odessey cables in my city and neighbour...and i've never seen it in online-shop in y country. I will find this but maybe it's impossible.

But there are next cables? where i can buy mich easy => Proper, Demolition, Animal liner, Wethepeople Hi Slick, Wethepeople Straight Wire, Stolen Linear Cable,Jagwire and Alligator. Have you ever used/heard about these cables? Which the best among them?

Also i'm interest in pads to bb7...What is better-standart pads or kool stop pads?

I'd probably go with the Proper one. No idea about the Jagwire or Alligator as i've never needed to change. I did try the Shimano XTRs for a change though, super smooth but too spongey to be used for rear disc. Alright on the front disc though.

As for pads, i've always used the standard BB7 ones.

It might be worth making a new topic so more people read in. Ideally titled 'BB7 Pads' and/ or 'Brake Cables'. There was a recent topic on brake cables i remember.
