Any Music Producers / Trance Lovers On Here?

On and off 6 years, though before I wasn't really interested, used all the built in samples and stuff... I focused more on mixing.

Now I've gone the opposite way and am trying to learn more and put loads of effort in - So really I'd say only about 6 months practice :)

This track is by no means finished, but it's by far the best I've done so far.

Now I f**king hate trance - but I was curious as to what someone else on TF might be making :)

I was pleasantly surprised.

Mix was really tight. Well... Everything was.

My only gripe would be that I'd drop the kick's pitch down a bit. That might jsut be me though. I like bass to be bassy :P

I never liked FL... Just seems nasty.

No VSTs?

Good work :)

FL used to be crap, I've been using it since version 4.

Now it's on version 8 and it's VERY powerful. A lot of big producers are starting to go to it - that says it all!

My production has a long way to go, but I'm happy with how I'm progressing. Maybe ambitious but I hope to be on a small record label at some point in 2009.

It was good, but not exactly to my taste.

This track needs a bit more "body" if you get me. Maybe more bass to give it some strength.

Also - 3:50 - 04:11 sounds more like the beginning of a transition than a part of the track. Also didn't like 05:00 - 05:05.

Don't know DJ terminology, hope that makes sense.

But other than that, it's growing on me as i write this. Definitely going on my ipod.

With all due respect - that says absolutely nothing.

Chris Clark used Cubase for his first 3 albums, but suddenly switched to Nuendo rewired through Reaktor for Turning Dragon. Does this make Cubase worse?

Does it bollocks.

Each DAW is different. Admittedly some ARE superior in areas, to others - but the inferior ones excede the superiors in their own areas.

Obvious example is Reason.

I love it to pieces.

MAJOR flaw is limited audio support, and no editting. Also no VSTs - which is a bit gay.

Now - even ACID can do both of these better than Reason. f**king... ACID man!

Does this make Reason shit?

No.

Press Tab, and you've got something NO other DAW offers.

It's the missing link between software and hardware.

Then again... Does that function make Reason superior to Logic? Hell no.

Take a look at sculpture.... That's just one function of Logic, and makes it worth buying it just for that.

Does that make Logic better than Ableton Live?

Naaaw.

If you want the best out of your DAWs - you gotta rewire 'em together.

[/what suddenly turned into a rant  ]

I wasn't saying others are crap, merely pointing out that producers wouldn't have touched FL a few years back, whereas now it's a contender with the bigger names :)

Thanks for the feedback :)

I was hoping people that don't like Trance / other dance music would comment, purely from the production side of things. Like I say, I don't claim to be good yet but I am definitely improving - I've worked on a few tracks over the past 6 months and each time I learn new tricks and track sounds more professional.

This track definitely needs more to it, I know what needs doing it's just a case of knowing how to do it :)

  • 2 weeks later...

So, this Katy Perry remix...

It wasn't really a remix, it was just my own track with her vocals sliced up and whacked in. I then realised I didn't like the vocals, the bass was a bit plain and the beats sucked. Hmm, only most of the track then!

If you would all be so kind as to go to the first post and download the newer version I've been working on, that'd be grand :)

Reckon it's better than the first version?

(Oh, btw it's gone from 137BPM to 145BPM - those that like harder dance might be up for this one!)

That changes everything, didn't know that. Will edit once I've listened to the new remix and made up my mind.

edit: I like this one much more. Here's some (hopefully) constructive criticism from someone with no knowledge on music.

As previously, it lacks body and flow in some places if you get me. Some moments just don't fit in, like those where there's almost complete silence and no beat.

The tune itself is great, you've got a very good solid base to improve and create a real masterpiece. Keep working on it man.

No I'm not copyrighting, no point until I get better :)

Inur - yes, pretty much from scratch, unless you count the authors of plugins / synths. It's all my own work though, I haven't stolen drumloops or anything.

So, what would you do if;

A track identical to yours appeared on Radio 1, being played 4 times an hour, the Katy Perry Remix for instance.

Would you just go, oh well?

Or would you say; Oi, that's mine bitch, give me my royalties.

If it's copyrighted, you can.

If it's not, you lose out on £8mil..

Copyright it dude. It's worth the price of a CD, a letter and a stamp.

Also note man, your stuff IS good enough. Take this from me, and I did admissions at a record company. (Suppose that actually doesn't mean much in todays musical climate. :P )

If I heard that Katy Perry remix on the radio, I'd make sure whoever selects tracks on that show got the sack.

Seriously, it's nowhere NEAR good enough to be broadcast. Well, then again, I class it as 100x better than Take That so maybe it is...

The only thing that defines something being broadcast ready is a bit more mixing and a hell load of compressing. Nothing to do with musicality anymore, which puts you high above most stuff played on the radio now'er days, in my opinion. :)
