george_seamons
With Christmas fast approaching, I've been looking around for MP3 players for my girlfriend. Everybody nowadays seems to have an Ipod (including myself). However, I still stand by my thinking of them being over priced for what they are. She doesn't need anything amazing, as long as it plays music, and has a decent amount of storage, she'll be happy! I was just wondering if anybody had used any cheaper alternatives, and could suggest something with about 4-8gb storage? There seems to be quite a few Japanese Ipod Touch copies on Ebay for around £40, but these seem to be a bit too cheap to be true? Any ideas guys? george_seamons
Ah yeah, forgot to say, a screen would be good! Thanks though!
JT!
iPods are worth the money. I know when you ask a question stating that you can't afford something, and then people tell you to go buy that something is f**king annoying, but still. Try have a look on ebay and see if you can get one of the older gen ipod nanos, you might be able to pick one of those up for much less than the new gen ones.I went though 3 cheapish mp3 players before i bought my ipod, they all were shit and only lasted a few months. If I'd have just gone out and bought an ipod straight away i would have saved myself the best part of £100.
eskimo
The Sony players are pretty good. I can't remember which i have but it's 8gb with a 2" screen. Works with drag and drop or Windows Media player 10 and above. Plays movies ete. Easy to use, good looking, comes in colours now. I got mine for £70 i think it was from Play. Only downside is you don't get a mains charger with it. Which i think is the biggest downfall on all the new players.

Tom_
Yea Id say an Ipod is pretty worth it to be honest, although from my experience the sonys are also pretty good quality. Again agreeing with whats written above, the cheaper players tend to be fairly shoddily built, and break pretty quickly. Thats about all I know on the subject, Iv had my 1st gen ipod video for nearly 3 years now, and its still going strong (although it would apear Iv manged to lose it somhow )

CurtisRider
George, just give her the ipod back? Buy Hannah a cassette tape player and keep the change, you know it makes sense.
george_seamons
Hahaha, yeah might not be such a bad idea!I don't really have a problem with ipods as such, (as I said, I have a 3rd (I think!) gen Nano) I just think they're more of a fashion item than a music player! I had actually looked into the Sony players, and the Creatives. The Zen looked quite nice, and was reasonably cheap. Anybody got any info on these? Rob_P
Recently bought this for my mum and it's pretty nice for the money. Samsung 4gbTouch buttons work pretty well, software is drag and drop (haven't tried it without the software yet but I think you can just drag music onto it using my computer), screens nice, super thin. Anybody got any info on these?Dunno about the Creative Zens, but I've got a 1gig Creative Muvo. Had it 2 years I think now, and it's still working fine (touch wood). Think they might do them larger than 1gig now, but dunno if they do them over 4gig.

MadManMike
Those iPod replicas are good but the batteries wear out quickly - like lose their charge holding ability.I'm a bit out of touch with MP3 players as I haven't worked in the hifi shop for over two years, but the Creative Zen's were always good back then. Mike Deere
Creative Zen and Creative Zen Mozaic are awesome players. Long battery lives, easy to use, great functions, very clear screens. And best of all the Zen is getting cheaper by the day.
Tomm
I don't really have a problem with ipods as such, (as I said, I have a 3rd (I think!) gen Nano) I just think they're more of a fashion item than a music player!I was pondering this the other day. When they were new and expensive, they were trendy and wearing white headphones made you look like a nonce. But I came to the conclusion that since everyone has one these days, they can't be a fashion item. Also, these days you can get a 16Gb nano for £150 which is probably enough storage for 90% of people. You no longer have to choose between having enough space and having a nice player. Like JT, I had loooads of different MP3 players before I succumbed and bought an iPod, but none of them were as good. I dunno, I think you can try and avoid iPods at all costs, but you'll only limit your options.
